After inviting them, they performed the practice of fierce mantra cursing. Through the actions of suppressing, burning, and throwing, they subdued the heretical groups and established the Buddhist teachings. From then on, the practice of wrathful rites (dgra chos) began, and later practices were modeled after it. Furthermore, where did the practice of wrathful rites originate? During the time of Emperor Trisong Detsen (742-797), a king from the borderlands rose up as an enemy, causing unrest and conflict in Tibet. Thereupon, King Trisong Detsen invited the master Padmasambhava and the scholar Vairotsana, and performed the practice of Hayagriva empowerment. They placed the enemy's effigy (linga), human bones, and the enemy's life-stone and life-tree into the skull of a wild animal and suppressed them under the threshold of the temple. The border war was averted, and Tibet was at peace. From then on, the practice of wrathful rites began, and later practices were modeled after it. Furthermore, where did the practice of wrathful rites originate? During the time of King Dozer Nagpo Karring, a king from the east rose up as an enemy, leading troops to Gyalmo Rong, and the kingdom was distracted by war and conflict. Thereupon, King Dozer Nagpo invited the translator Vairotsana and Yu Nyingspo, and requested them to repel the army. The two masters consulted and cursed the enemy through Mahakala, created an effigy of the enemy inside a yak horn, and suppressed it under a dangerous practice site. The enemy's territory was defeated, and the Zun side prevailed. They performed the wrathful rites and hid them as treasures. From then on, the practice of wrathful rites began, and later practices were modeled after it. Today, we... the left yak horn... the enemy effigy linga... that black stone... that clay is ling... salt, alkali, or garlic... hateful enemies, harm, obstacles... armies, bandits... thieves, lawsuits... evil thoughts, evil deeds... all demons and evil spirits... The one who performs the destruction, may the enemy not escape... The one who suppresses, may the enemy not rise! From then on, on a clean slate or wooden board, place a piece of each of the zamba-made animals; a piece of black stone; and a piece of each of salt, garlic, alkali, saltpeter, ash, and clay. Arrange all these items completely. During the intervals from the first to the ninth day, everyone passes it with their left hand, uttering whatever curses they can think of, and taking it from the left armpit, they hand it over to the tiger-year-born man in front. He performs the destruction on the linga inside the yak horn, saying: Hūṃ! I am the lord of all wrathful kings!
