The mind is like the fifteenth-day moon, blending with all external objects. Being unobscured, clear, and without an object is the quality of awareness. However, attachment, aversion, and so on, blending with mundane objects, are characteristics of the mind. Likewise, awareness is the wisdom of abiding in its own state. This is the realization that is free from grasping and being grasped. It does not rely on the means of meditation. "Sinking" is like falling into the swamp of diminished awareness; "excitement" is being free from the faults of coarse afflictions. The mind is the samadhi of focusing single-pointedly on the object it aims at and clinging to it. There is a relationship of support and being supported. Although awareness arises in relation to objects, it is not overcome by the brilliance of appearances, just as mercury, even when it falls on the ground, is not stained by dust. The mind, being associated with the aspects of grasping and being grasped, is mixed with the tendency to accept good and bad thoughts. Although awareness does not abandon the nature of the mind, the reason why mind and awareness do not coexist is that the appearance of the five external objects and the duality of good and bad are of the same essence as oneself, so afflictions are like a swarm fleeing together. Such fleeing is the special dharma of the Great Perfection Mind Series, which certainly liberates from the prison of afflictions. Apart from that, all the subtle and coarse collections of afflictions are abandoned like the poison of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Bodhisattvas subdue them with antidotes. In general, mantra practice involves transforming afflictions into the path or integrating the path into afflictions. The Mind Series involves liberating them in their natural state by abiding in the nature of mind. The Space Series involves purifying the two, abandonment and antidote, into one within the nature of reality. All these are subtle habits of grasping and being grasped in the realm of awareness, that is, the object is extremely subtle, and then it dissolves into no object, which is wonderful, but not entirely so, according to the teachings of Somnyi. Similarly, the alaya of samsara and the dharmakaya of nirvana, although one in the realm of emptiness, the dharmakaya is like an ocean without conceptualization. The alaya-vijnana is the obscuration of the initial appearance of samsara, like crossing the ocean with a boat, both samsara and nirvana can be transcended. However, from that very basis, samsara arises due to the fault of delusion, and ni.
