In the hells, first is the abyss of excrement; second is the thick mud of rotting corpses; third is the forest of sword leaves; fourth is the river of ashes, seething within which, the messengers of Yama utter terrifying sounds. The trunks of the Shalmali trees, the beings born there, remembering the vows of affection from their living lives, hoping to meet, if male, the female calls, if female, the male calls, seeing this, on the path they pursue, sharp thorns pierce severely, the karmic body burns, rough iron males and females embrace, ultimately suffering greatly, various crows and vultures peck at the eyes. The cold hells are blizzards, the rough touch of wind stiffens the body, trembling intensely from the cold, even bound by ropes, unable to move, though appearing alive, due to the wind's weapons piercing deep into the marrow of the bones, the cold touch causes suffering as if squeezed between the teeth, becoming weak. Moreover, there are the blister hells, the burst blister hells, uttering cries of "A-chu," uttering sounds of "Aye-yo," the teeth-gnashing hells, the skin splitting into six petals like an উৎপला, wounds splitting into eight and sixteen countless petals like the lotus and the great lotus, sharp-beaked creatures pecking and eating the body. The ephemeral hells are, cutting down large and small trees, mistaking them for one's own body; being enveloped inside stones and rocks without doors; one's own body transforming into doors, pillars, stoves, and looms, various illusions created by karma, clinging to these, one must endure endless suffering. In the realm of the pretas, afflicted by miserliness, the suffering caused by deprivation of desire and attachment is constant and unceasing, like hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear, which are extremely unbearable. As mentioned above, these sufferings should be understood. Due to the affliction of ignorance, even if born and dwelling as animals, they suffer various pains such as being killed by humans, bound by ropes, struck by stones and wood, and defiled.

One must experience the suffering of division. Especially in the place of sinking, one must abandon peaceful virtues. For those who do not incline towards just a share of merit, in a place where there is not even the light of the sun and moon, they devour each other, and must experience various unbearable sufferings of animals, as is clarified in the instructional texts. Therefore, if one does not prevent the light of birth, which is like a flood of danger, and the clamor of waves of suffering that arise from its causes and conditions, then the body that is superior to the gods is the precious human body. Even if one blocks the flood with a dam, and adorns it as a tangible ornament, if one does not prevent the faults arising from the earth through practice, one will wander in the desolate plain of impermanence. The samadhi of the formless realm is unindicated karma, therefore, the cause of being born there is the unwavering cause and effect, so when it is exhausted, it will create actions in the next life. The cause of being born in the form realm is also that the previous karma that draws one to any of the ten virtues and four dhyanas is exhausted, and one must experience the suffering of falling downwards. Brahma, the king of the gods, and the wheel-turning kings, too, are like this. Those who manifest exalted bodies, like the sun shining through the clouds, although temporarily seeking a time of happiness as the ripening of previously accumulated white karma, as soon as they abandon the cause of being born there, they will decline like wax consumed by a lamp's flame. In the desire realm, when one steps on something, it is not a rough touch, but a very soft touch, and the gods, nagas, and non-humans bow their heads to the feet of the king of the gods, turning the lotus on their feet into red lotus feet. That king of the gods must also suffer on the burning tip of an iron stake. Relying on the vines that touch the new breasts of heavenly maidens, becoming pleasure gardens for union with young gods, and abandoning their own perfect wealth and enjoyment, such as the beautiful pearl nets of immeasurable palaces, they universally fall into pits of fire and must experience suffering. The goddesses whose clothes, cushions, and flower ornaments become old, and who show signs of death!
