Homage to the Guru! This is the basic chapter. If one wishes to have a definite understanding of the self-result of the three vehicles (Śrāvakayāna, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna) to be cultivated, one must go through three paths (the path of renunciation, the path of bodhicitta, the path of non-dual wisdom). Here, we are talking about Anuttarayoga. Anuttarayoga is divided into generation stage and completion stage, and here we are talking about the completion stage, which is the profound essence of all tantras. Before practicing, one must first understand the true nature. However, regarding the true nature, there are many fabricated sequences by various schools. What is said here is the essence of certainty that is in line with all the scriptures of exoteric and esoteric: the inseparability of the two truths (ultimate truth, conventional truth). This is the uncommon realm of activity of all Buddhas, so it is secret; it is also the source of all dharmas, so it is a treasure. To determine this (inseparability of the two truths), first, it is necessary to determine the inseparability of the base truth; second, to practice the inseparability of samsara and nirvana on the path; and finally, to realize the inseparability of the base and result in the result. Here is the first of the three: What is the nature of the reality called 'inseparability of the two truths'? Its nature is the wisdom of primordial luminosity, also known as the Tathāgatagarbha. The word 'luminosity', as it shows, is both free from darkness and has manifestation. Thus, it is free from obscurations and has the clarity of wisdom, hence the name wisdom free from obscurations. This is spoken from the perspective of the clarity of wisdom. This wisdom, from the beginningless time, does not fall into any extreme, so it is peaceful, that is, the nature of non-proliferation, residing in its own nature. This is in terms of emptiness. 21-6-169a The example of wisdom and emptiness is like the essence of the sun's luminosity and the unobstructed sky. The clarity is spontaneously accomplished, and the nature is unconditioned. Thus, this Dharmadhatu of the union of wisdom and emptiness does not depend on the effort of the path, but is naturally pure. It is not touched by the two faults of conditioned samsara and the one-sided peace of the unconditioned, so it is great purity. Because it has always resided in such a state, the essence has no distinction between appearance and emptiness, there is no need to prove that nirvana is true, and there is no need to eliminate that samsara is true. Therefore, faults do not go away, and merits do not come. Thus, worldly names and conceptual thoughts cannot be involved, so worldly proliferation is completely stopped. All samsara, nirvana, appearance, emptiness, merits, faults, etc., which are measured by names and conceptual thoughts, cannot withstand examination. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because of obscuration, it is the conventional truth, and all its causes are pacified. Therefore, since it transcends the scope of distinguishing 'this is conventional' and 'this is ultimate,' the two truths that are established and clung to, such as 'what arises from the mind of philosophical tenets is conventional, and what abides without arising is ultimate,' do not exist. Therefore, it transcends these, and all elaborations such as grasping at existence and non-existence are pacified. The reason for this is that, in terms of the nature of reality, the two truths are indivisible, so it cannot be said that it is established in the conventional or not established in the ultimate. The key lies in this. In conclusion: Thus, in the realm of phenomena, the nature of appearance and emptiness is non-dual and indivisible. Therefore, the conventional truth and the ultimate truth are also indivisible, and this is merely expressed with sounds and words. Even if the realm of phenomena is such, relying on the way of appearance, distinguishing them in terms of mere names, like this, all the phenomena of samsara that are included in illusion and appear under the influence of the grasping mind are untrue, wavering, and impermanent when examined. Therefore, the deceptive phenomena are the conventional truth. And the profound, which is difficult to realize, all elaborations are pacified, the clear light of wisdom, and the phenomena included in the great nirvana because all suffering is abandoned, transcend the phenomena of particles and moments. Therefore, it is free from the suffering of change and has an unchanging nature, which is considered the ultimate truth. Regarding the establishment of conventional and ultimate truths, establishing them in terms of the way of appearance and the way of being is to establish them in terms of the appearing part and the empty part, which is the same and equal in both samsara and nirvana. Here, the way of being and the way of appearance are the same or different, and the school establishes them as ultimate and conventional truths. Such two great traditions often appear in the sutras, so they should not be confused with each other. This later way of establishing is to distinguish between correct and incorrect by the measure of nominal reasoning, thereby establishing the two truths. Therefore, in this treatise, it is also said: 'Distinguishing by the way of the two nominal truths.' It should be understood in this way that, measured by the measure of ultimate truth, nirvana is not something that can be analyzed or truly established. It is important to distinguish this. Furthermore, in the realm of experience with dualistic appearances, the unstable and wavering conventional, the various things that appear in this way, such as magic, water moons, emanations, images... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
