Collected Teachings of Ju Mipham MP216: A Brief Explanation of the Garland of Jewels Differentiating Letters 14-6-1a A Brief Explanation of the Garland of Jewels Differentiating Letters Namo Guru Padma Manjushri Vajra Tikshaya. Here, I will briefly explain the distinctions in letter writing: the paper used for writing, the appearance of the written words, the manner of expression, the method of applying a seal to avoid confusion, the folding method, the method of including accompanying items, and the method of sealing for confidentiality—all these are among the treasures of the kingdom. First, the writing paper: the better the quality, the more important it is, but nowadays, high-quality white paper is popular. Leave space at the top and bottom. The higher the recipient's status, the more space should be left at the top and the less at the bottom. For official documents, leave ample space at the bottom. For extremely respected individuals, if one line of text is sufficient in height, leave one line's height at the top. Also, leave one line's height for the signature, making it three lines in total. It is acceptable to leave even more space at the top. Begin with 'དབུ་འཛིན།' or '༄༅། །' and express as much respect as possible, but do not exceed two-thirds of the paper. Otherwise, leave just one line between 'ཞུ་གསོལ་'. If there are many honorifics or if it is like poetry, you can leave two or three lines and then write 'ཞུ་གསོལ་' and the signature at the end. Leave four finger-widths at the top of the letter and one, two, or one and a half finger-widths at the bottom. Narrow spacing between lines indicates respect, while wide spacing indicates no honorifics. In short, carefully consider the space at the top and the name of the signatory, as well as the space at the bottom and the text itself. For something like 'ཁྲི་དྲུང་དུ།', writing 'གུས་པའི་ཞུ་གསོལ་' below 'ཁྲི་' indicates great respect. Writing it below 'དྲུང་' indicates moderate respect, and writing it below 'ཏུ' indicates general respect. Interlacing the lines of text indicates respect for powerful lamas or superiors. Not interlacing them indicates a lack of respect. For things like 'ཕྱག་ཏུ།', and for those of lower status than oneself, there is no need for special respect, so write directly. Second, the writing should be clear and the strokes should be neat. Large characters are used for official documents and formal occasions, while small characters are sufficient for other situations. Third, depending on the recipient's status, there are seven categories: extremely respected, respected, general, equal status, lower status, and issuing commands to those of lower status. For the first four categories, first praise the greatness of the recipient, and then express humility and respect. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third, regarding inquiring about well-being, it includes four aspects: first, words of praise; second, expressing one's own situation while remembering the kindness of superiors; third, requesting current matters; fourth, praying for future auspiciousness; and fifth, conveying tokens as a symbol of expression. Among these seven aspects, first, for the supreme place, it itself is extremely prominent in both politics and religion. Taking the first case as an example, at the end of the words of praise, such as: 'The lotus feet are placed beside the high throne adorned with the jewels of the crowns of hundreds of gods.' This is like placing the lotus feet on a high throne, which is then revered by the crowns of hundreds of gods, while oneself is in its vicinity or lowest position, similar to the superposition of fourfold honorifics. Below it, such as: 'The lotus feet are worshipped by the crowns of hundreds of gods.' This is like not only praising the lotus feet, but also being in its vicinity, similar to the superposition of threefold honorifics. For the middle case, such as: 'The place where the lotus of the feet rises prominently.' and so on. For the general case, it is sufficient to use only 'Your feet.' By analogy, for those with prominent political status, for the supreme ones, at the end of the words of praise, such as: 'The light of the toes illuminates the heads of the arrogant rulers of the small countries in all directions, decorating the lowest part of the high throne.' and so on, it can be understood by analogy. Second, accompanied by hundreds and thousands of prostrations, respectfully requesting, etc., depending on the specific situation. If too many honorifics are not needed, then there is no need for prostrations, just respectfully state or request. For those who were not familiar before, respect should be expressed, such as: Someone under the protection of so-and-so, stating with sincere prostrations. Third, for the situation of good health and smooth career, it should be beautified with rhetoric, expressing such great kindness or admiration. If it is a reply to a letter, then the physical condition and the content of the letter should be replied appropriately. Fourth, according to one's own situation and the degree of dependence on the kindness of superiors, for example: 'My illness is also living in peace under the shade of the immeasurable compassion of the superiors.' Or, for people who do not need too many honorifics, such as kings and lamas, it can be said: 'Relying on the blessings of the Three Jewels, the body and mind are stable, and the good thoughts are not lost.' and so on. If the relationship is close, then the inside story can be described in detail. Fifth, for the current request, the request should be made directly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
