Collection of Instructions by Ju Mipam Rinpoche MP19 Extremely Brief Notes on Twenty Commitments 12-18-1a Extremely Brief Notes on Twenty Commitments 12-18-1b The wisdom body of the all-knowing Victorious Ones, The all-pervading Lord, Manjushri Vajra, Inseparable, glorious Lama's feet, I worship in the lotus of my heart in all lives. Here, to explain the meaning of the words of the twenty commitments, there are three parts: a brief introduction through the three aspects of commitment; a detailed explanation of the same through twenty shlokas; and a verbal expression of how to gather the essence of its meaning. The first has three parts: the preparation for making the commitment; the actual making of the commitment; and the aspiration for the completion of the commitment. The first is Om Hum Om (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओम्,梵文罗马拟音:om,汉语字面意思:嗡) is the word that begins the commitment and auspiciousness. Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुम्,梵文罗马拟音:hum,汉语字面意思:吽) is the preliminary to requesting the Lama and the deities of the mandala to grant their commitment and listen. The second, the actual making of the commitment, has three parts: making the commitment in the manner of aspiring to the object of focus; making the commitment in the manner of engaging in the means of accomplishment; and making the commitment in the manner of bringing the accomplished activity to completion. The first is: 'How are you, Sugata? May I become just like that!' That is, from the cause and path of bliss to the result, without turning back, the Sugata is the master of complete abandonment and realization. Just as you are, may I become just like that! This is making a commitment with a single-pointed aspiration, focusing on the supreme Buddha to be attained, and holding firmly to 'just like that'. The second is: 'The wonderful and inconceivable conduct, I will practice for the benefit of beings. The supreme and sacred Bodhicitta, and the mudras of body, speech, and mind, I will not abandon even for the sake of my life, may Vajra King bless me!' That is, the profound and vast, wonderful and inconceivable conduct of the Vidyadhara Bodhisattvas who manifest that ultimate result. For the benefit of sentient beings, I will practice, which is the general commitment of the Great Vehicle. The supreme and sacred Bodhicitta, inseparable from ultimate truth, and the yoga of the body's generation stage mudras, the yoga of speech's recitation mantras, and the yoga of mind's clear light Suchness. Because these three are inseparable, they are called mudras. Such a commitment will not be abandoned even for the sake of life. May the Vajra King, the chief of the mandala, inseparable from the Lama, bless me to complete the path and the commitment. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is about holding the mantra vow in particular. Third is: 'In this evil age of the end times, I will accomplish the deeds that Buddhas find difficult to accomplish; I will practice the conduct that Bodhisattvas find difficult to practice. In this mandala of Vajra Yoga, may we accomplish our wishes.' This means that, in order to accomplish the merits of the vow, in this evil age of the end times, I will accomplish all the deeds of the Buddhas. This is the vow. 'Difficult' means that in this age of the five degenerations, due to the faults of sentient beings themselves, even the deeds of the Buddhas are difficult to enter the realm (of sentient beings). The conduct of Bodhi, including perfection, maturation, and taming, is difficult for ordinary people to practice, but I will practice them.' Thus it is said. Third, praying for the fulfillment of the vow: Relying on the proper yoga in this profound Vajrayana, through the mandala of approaching, practicing, and the four branches of practice, may all our wishes, as we desire, be fulfilled. Second, elaborating on the vow through twenty shlokas, divided into three parts: beginning by requesting the object of the vow as a witness, explaining the vow itself in detail, and ending by praying for the benefits of this life and the next. First is: beginning with 'Om, Yoga Lord' etc., two shlokas to inform the main deity and retinue. Starting with 'Om, auspicious' and the mantra of the vow, the lord of all yogis, the perfect or ultimate wisdom that knows all things as they are, with great compassion that benefits all beings, ruling over the limitless benefits of sentient beings, becoming the sole protector or refuge of the three realms, becoming the guru of worldly gods Brahma, Indra, etc., and also the deity of the mandala that transcends the world, the main deity of the mandala, Bhagavan, please listen to my prayer. The retinue is the retinue manifested by the Tathagata himself from wisdom, inseparable from self-nature, and the retinue with special intelligence. Including the ocean of the Buddha's self-manifested retinue, and the retinue that opens enlightenment and tames other disciples, such as the common great breathers, etc., the Yoga Lords summarized by the three noble paths, the great assembly that accomplishes the two kinds of accomplishments, and the individuals abiding in the path of accumulation and union, the guardian deities and non-gods, i.e., humans and kumbhandas. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
