Collected Teachings of Khenpo Gangshar, MP42, A Concise Practical Guide to Manjushri Lamp Offering: Nectar for the Ears 5-28-1a A Concise Practical Guide to Manjushri Lamp Offering: Nectar for the Ears 5-28-1b Namo Guru Manjushriye. Here, to write a concise practical guide on how to perform the Manjushri lamp offering, it is divided into two parts: preliminary and main practice. First, after the seven, five, or three-day practice and offering to the venerable Manjushri, on the last day, the lama or disciplinarian should generally explain the benefits and auspiciousness of this offering, and specifically instruct on how to conduct the actions of body, speech, and mind during the dawn offering. Be sure to listen carefully from 'Ocean of Assembled Awareness and Liberation'. We, who are born in this degenerate age and seek the meaning of practice, 5-28-2a should strive to attain the state of omniscience. The only cause for attaining this state is the accumulation of the two accumulations (of merit and wisdom). Since the accumulation of these accumulations depends on merit, merit is crucial. The 'Extensive Play Sutra' states: 'The ripening of merit brings happiness and abandons all suffering. The thoughts of those who possess merit are also accomplished. Having conquered the demons, one quickly attains enlightenment. One obtains the object of peace, coolness, and the cessation of sorrow.' As the scripture says, from the ultimate state of Buddhahood to the happiness of the world and even the slightest fame, everything depends on the accumulation of merit. 5-28-2b Therefore, accumulating merit is crucial. The importance of accumulating merit can be explained by quoting the teachings of sutras and tantras, and by telling stories such as 'Prince Sonam Tob'. Although there are many methods for accumulating merit, the most supreme is offering. The benefits of making offerings are immeasurable. The 'Sutra' states: 'Even offering just one flower to a Sugata's (Buddha's) image or a painted image on a wall, with the body in reverence and the mind sincere, those will gradually see billions of Buddhas.' It also says: 'If one throws a single flower into the sky towards the Buddha, then in samsara, he will not experience the results of being Indra (a deity) and a Chakravartin (universal monarch) for five hundred lifetimes.' The 'Avatamsaka Sutra' states: 'Hearing, seeing, and making offerings to the Buddhas will also increase immeasurable accumulations of merit. When all the sufferings of samsara's afflictions are abandoned, in this conditioned existence, the merit will not be exhausted until enlightenment is attained.' It also says: 'Even if a pile of dry grass is as high as a mountain, 5-28-3a a --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as a clump of weeds is burned to ashes, similarly, even a small offering to the Sugata (Buddha) can burn away all afflictions and become the cause of Nirvana (cessation).’ And so on, many scriptures have explained this. Between those with dull faculties, those with sharp faculties, those abiding in the fruit, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas, the field of merit becomes increasingly superior. The merits of the Buddha are inconceivable, as explained in detail or in brief in scriptures such as the 'Throwing Stone Sutra' and the 'Inconceivable Secret Sutra'. As stated in the sutras, the roots of virtue directed towards the Buddha are never wasted. In particular, reciting and prostrating to the names of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River is less beneficial than reciting 'Manjushri' (Gentle Glory) once, as declared by the immaculate words of the Buddha. The reason for this is that 'Manjushri' refers to the non-dual wisdom of all Buddhas. Since the wisdom of all Buddhas of the three times has transformed into a wisdom hero, he is known by the name 'Manjushri Wisdom Hero'. He is also the throat of the Sugatas, the conch of Dharma, or the essence of the inexhaustible speech, the wheel of adornment, and is therefore also called 'Lord of Speech'. He is also the Vajra body of all Buddhas, and is therefore called 'Supreme Body Manjushri Vajra'. Thus, the ultimate wisdom body, inseparable from the body, speech, and mind of all guides of the three times, is the definitive meaning of Manjushri. He manifests with perfect marks and signs, and as a youth, he guides beings on the path to liberation with immeasurable means as long as existence lasts. As praised: 'Although he is the father of all Buddhas, he plays the role of a youth.' In India and Tibet, accomplished saints have relied on him as their unique Yidam (tutelary deity). The reason is that the profound and subtle teachings of the Buddha, which are difficult to understand, are liberated through the power of these five, as Guru Padmasambhava repeatedly advised after appearing to Nagarjuna. The key to the ultimate of the Vehicle, the Great Perfection of Clear Light (Dzogchen), must also be realized by relying on this deity. Therefore, Manjushri Guru and other masters of the Vidyadhara lineage have made him the chief of their Yidams. The early translation school (Nyingma) and Orgyen --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
