When the thought of "I" suddenly arises, it is necessary to ascertain the appearance at that very moment. After that, even if you constantly examine its appearance, it will be uncertain because it is mixed with other things. Therefore, the way to ascertain it is: adjust the posture, straighten the spine, and make the awareness sharp and alert. When the thought of "I" arises in the mind of innate self-grasping, first set up a mindful observer, thinking that you must determine what kind of appearance it presents. Then, even if the thought of "I" does not arise, deliberately strive to cultivate the thought of "I," and as soon as it suddenly arises, examine its appearance. In this way, without being mixed with other objects, you will come to know how it appears on its own. Moreover, the mind that examines the appearance is simultaneous with it, and the mind that ascertains the appearance arises in its second moment. In general, the mind of innate self-grasping does not manifest the appearance of the aggregates, and especially it does not manifest simultaneously with the thought of "I." If you think that the appearance of the aggregates seems to appear to it, that occurs before it, and is not an appearance to it. Like this, without losing the thought of "I," if you slowly look from the side, you will find that the thought of "I" has such a unique appearance, which is not any of the aggregates, etc. For the thought of "I," the "I" does not merely appear as a name, but appears as a kind of solid existence. Because of clinging to it as established according to that appearance, one is bound in samsara. Therefore, if you can understand well how the innate thought of "I" appears, you will be able to determine the object to be refuted. You should also observe the form, appearance, and clinging of that sign-property on the "I" and other things such as the aggregates. Second, if it is established in that appearance, then there cannot be a third thing besides "one" and "different," so the "I" and my aggregates must become "one" established in substance, and "different" established in substance, because in substance, these two exclude a third aggregate. Whatever consciousness, whatever object appears, is pervaded by appearing as an unparalleled "one" and a "different" with opposites, because there is no third aggregate in these two appearances. In this way, since there is no "one" and "different," it is certain that the pervasion pervades that there is no truth. The third part is divided into two parts, the first is

Therefore, it is certain that the "one" that is established in meaning between me and my skandhas is not like that. If I and the skandhas are established as one in meaning as they appear, then they must be established as a "one" with absolutely no difference. If that were the case, it would also change like the current skandhas. So, am I one with the current aggregate of body and mind, or am I one with the separate body and mind? If I am one with the aggregate of body and mind, then together with such an aggregate, I would have come here from a previous life and would go from here to a future life, because I am one with the current aggregate of body and mind. If I am one with the separate body and mind, then am I one with the body or one with the mind? If I am one with the body, then am I one with the aggregate of the body's limbs or with each individual limb? If I am one with the aggregate of the body's limbs, then when the body and mind are separated and the body lies on the bed, I would also be there, and when the body is burned by fire and ceases to exist, I would also cease to exist, etc., because I am the person whose body, being one with the aggregate of the body's limbs, has become like that. If this is accepted, then I would cease to be born in the six realms of samsara, etc. If I am one with each individual limb of the body, then I would be one with each part between the toenails and with each hair on the head, because I am such a one with each individual limb of the body. If this is accepted, then the number of parts between the toenails and the number of hairs on the head of one person should be equal to the number of "I"s that exist in that one person. If I am one with the current mind, then am I one with all six consciousnesses or one with the mind-consciousness? If I am one with all six consciousnesses, then when the six consciousnesses arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person, that person would become six different continuums, because I am one with all six consciousnesses. If I am one with the mind-consciousness, then when I am in a state of non-conceptual absorption or when I faint, I would cease to exist, because at that time the mind-consciousness ceases. The head and hands of the mind-consciousness would also ache, etc. Therefore, it is certain that the "one" that is established in meaning between me and the skandhas as they appear is not like that. Second.
