A Profound Path Madhyamaka View Instruction According to the Prasangika Madhyamaka System. A Profound Path Madhyamaka View Instruction According to the Prasangika Madhyamaka System. A booklet entitled A Profound Path Madhyamaka View Instruction According to the Prasangika Madhyamaka System is presented herein. To the lotus feet of Je Rinpoche, the Omniscient One, and Je-tsun Jampel Yang, inseparable, I prostrate and take refuge in all lifetimes. Please, with great compassion, hold me in all lifetimes. Here, there are three aspects to the method of meditating on the view instruction according to the Prasangika Madhyamaka system: preliminaries, main practice, and conclusion. First, the preliminary practices are the Guru Yoga, as taught in the Great and Concise Stages of the Path to Enlightenment composed by Je himself, as well as the practices for individuals of small and middling capacity, the mind-training practices for bodhicitta, and the general teachings on the conduct of a bodhisattva, including instruction. In particular, relying on a scholar who knows the essential points of the scriptures without distortion, listening to the immaculate treatises, and generating a view that realizes suchness through the wisdom of listening and contemplation, as well as all the collections of causes for vipassana that are taught, and contemplating in detail the benefits of realizing the view of selflessness, and then, through the power of generating strong conviction, generating a desire to seek the view—this is one. Also, if one follows the thought of the noble Nagarjuna, as explained by glorious Chandrakirti, one will generate conviction in the way that the ultimate essential point of the view will be found, and then generate a desire to know how to cultivate the view of that system—this is one. Know that these are the main preliminaries for view instruction, and strive to generate them in your mindstream. Second, regarding the main practice, the enumeration is definite that there are two types of selflessness, that of persons and that of phenomena. Also, the order is that upon the basis of refutation, the person, the object to be refuted is the self of the person, and the mere cutting off of that is the selflessness of the person, and upon the basis of refutation, the aggregates, the object to be refuted is the self of phenomena, and the mere cutting off of that is the selflessness of phenomena. Although one does not want to have subtle and gross distinctions for these two, there are differences in terms of ease and difficulty of ascertainment. Therefore, the order is definite that one should first meditate on the selflessness of persons and then meditate on the selflessness of phenomena. Thus, there are two aspects to the method of meditating on the two selflessnesses: meditating on the selflessness of persons and meditating on the selflessness of phenomena. First, there are two aspects to this: I myself

Meditating on emptiness, and meditating on the selflessness of 'I'. The former has two aspects: the yoga of equipoise like the sky, and the yoga of subsequent attainment like illusion. The former has four aspects: In the co-emergent thought of 'I', the appearance of that distinct basis is well manifested, knowing the key point of making 'I' appear, and if that appearance is established, then it is impossible to have aggregates other than one, so 'I' and my aggregates are determined to be either a self-established non-dual one, or a self-established dual different one, pervasive determination, and action determination, and 'I' and my aggregates are determined not to be a self-established one and different, which is a nature determination, and on the basis of negation, the object to be negated is completely separated, which is the determination of the probandum of the sign, that is, the sign of being separate from one and many. The first is: In the co-emergent thought of 'I', the mere 'I' that is separate from the characteristics of 'I' that are self and simultaneous, is not merely a general sound, but appears in the mind as if it is established in meaning, which is said to appear as self-established, and to appear as established by its own nature, and to appear as established by its own characteristics, and to appear as truly established. If that appearance is established in this way, it will turn into the self of the person, and truly established, etc., and if that mind holds that appearance as established in this way, it will turn into co-emergent self-grasping. When an image of a child appearing in a mirror is acting, there is no difference between this part of the image appearing as acting and this part not appearing, and everything appears as acting. Similarly, this part of me appears as established in meaning, and there is no part of me that is not established in meaning, and all parts appear as established in meaning. When the two, the image and the distinct basis, are not familiar with the expression, they appear mixed together, so that mind clings to the image as a face. In the thought of 'I', the two, appearing as established in meaning and not established in meaning, are mixed together, so that appearance clings to being established in meaning. That is also, when examining how the appearance is in the thought of 'I', if the way of appearance of 'I' appearing to the mind of co-emergent self-grasping appears as a wobbly appearance (there is a mistake), then it is not knowing how to examine.
