Furthermore, entering is the very nature of decline. Since it necessarily depends on entering as a precursor, decline is also examined incidentally. Seventh, the establishment of the eater, the doer, and the liberator: Do you consider the one who is transformed by the happiness and suffering produced by objects to be the eater? Or do you consider the one who is not transformed? According to the latter, it is not reasonable to be the eater, because the one who benefits or harms by consuming what is to be eaten is the eater. According to the former, the self is a real entity but meaningless, because only the change of conditioned dharmas is seen. The fault of change should also be understood in the latter two. Do you consider the change of mind to be the doer? Or do you consider the one who does not change? If it does not change, the doer is lost, because the one who changes the mind is reasonably a person. Do you consider the one who is transformed by afflictions and near afflictions to be liberated, etc.? Or do you consider the one who does not change? If it does not change, it is because it was not previously bound, how can it be reasonably liberated later? Eighth, the refutation of the doer: Is the doer established only on the self? Or is it also possible on others? According to the former, it is not reasonable for the light of fire to illuminate, etc. According to the latter, it is enough to designate the seer and the hearer as the doer, and there is no acceptance of a real entity. Ninth, the necessity of the speaker: Does the term person apply only to the self? Or does it also apply to others? According to the former, it is not reasonable to apply the terms Buddha, qualities, spiritual friend, etc. to the body of a person. According to the latter, it also applies to the seer, etc., so that is enough, and the self is meaningless. Tenth, such imputation: Is something like the self virtuous or non-virtuous? It is not reasonable to be virtuous, because it especially increases for the ignorant, and it also arises without the effort of exertion, and it generates fear of liberation, and it is seen to nourish faults such as attachment. If it is non-virtuous, then it is confused by clinging to the object of inverted attachment, so it is not possible to prove that I exist through that. It is also not reasonable to view selflessness as non-virtuous, because it is highly praised by the omniscient, and it must be established with great effort, and it does not generate fear of liberation, and the fruit of white dharma is immediately obtained.

And, in order to counteract transgressions. Even if it is virtue, it cannot establish the existence of self because of the inverted view of self. Furthermore, does the self abide in the suchness of the object, thereby generating the view of self? Or, like non-self, is it imputed as existent due to the force of habituating to inappropriate attention? If it is the former, then Buddhists should not generate certainty of non-self, because the view of self, born from the power of things, obstructs it. If it is the latter, then it will not be possible to establish the existence of self through it. In short, for any stream of aggregates, the subject of dharma, the person who is not merely imputed, is without inherent existence, because it is not established as either inherently one with or inherently different from the aggregates. This is a brief summary. The cause of generating doubt about the existence of self is to take what appears to the co-emergent view of self as a valid cognition. For the co-emergent view of self, only a self that is other than the aggregates appears, because one would abandon these aggregates and seek something better than this for the sake of others, but would not want to abandon the self. When one negates that a person exists substantially, it necessarily follows that one must completely determine that a person is merely imputed, because everyone must acknowledge that there is a person at all. The mere imputation is to be understood on the basis of the force of negating substantial existence. Others say that if one extensively refutes the object of attachment of a deluded mind, wanting to stop the mind, this is an external proliferation, and therefore proliferation will increase again without end. May there be auspiciousness! May the victorious doctrine's lotus garden be filled with the fragrance of benefit and happiness, with blossoming petals of explanation and practice, the essence of liberation's honey, for the benefit of all beings, in the continent of the four births and ten virtues, may this great Dharma monastery spread the rain of Dharma giving. Mangalam! A concise explanation of the Madhyamaka view instruction given by Je Rinpoche.
