A Brief Guide to the Madhyamaka View Given by Je Rinpoche A Brief Guide to the Madhyamaka View Given by Je Rinpoche A Brief Guide to the Madhyamaka View Given by Je Rinpoche is complete. I prostrate to the venerable gurus! Here, samsara has its root in the view of the aggregates as a real self. Therefore, those who seek liberation should refute it. Among the two, the conceptual and the innate, the innate should be refuted primarily, because it is the main cause that leads all, both wise and foolish, into samsara. Even so, in all the treatises, the refutation of the conceptual self is extensively made, because the proponents of self, both our own and others' schools, assert the self in order to establish the object of the innate self. By refuting these, it is indirectly refuted. And, for those whose minds have not been transformed by worldly philosophies, it is not appropriate to argue in order to establish selflessness. If the pervasive does not exist, the pervaded does not exist. By this reasoning, in reality, if the conceptual self is refuted, then the innate self is also refuted, but it is not refuted in the mind, because the mind that ascertains the non-existence of the pervasive cannot ascertain the non-existence of the pervaded. To this, the proponents of self say: The self exists, because when things and so on are seen without prior conceptualization, the minds of sentient beings arise. And, if a concept is formed beforehand, then an existent thing is perceived. The former means that if there were no self, then when the shape of a man's appearance, etc., is seen, only the cognition of the shape would arise, and the cognition of a sentient being should not arise, but in fact, the cognition of a sentient being is seen to arise. Therefore, there is a self or sentient being other than just the aggregates. Similarly, when pleasant and painful feelings are seen, only the cognition of the feeling should arise. But, for those who mainly experience pleasant feelings, the cognition of a higher being arises; for those who mainly experience suffering, the cognition of a lower being arises, which should not happen. And, when names such as Devadatta are given, only the cognition of the concept should arise, and not the cognition of a sentient being other than that. And, when one is afflicted by attachment and other afflictions, and when one engages in actions such as faith, only the cognition of the action should arise, and not the cognition of a wise person or a child.
