When consciousness enters an object through the sense organs such as the eyes, the thought arises that consciousness sees. Because the thought of a sentient being thinking "I see" does not arise, the thought of a sentient being arises. There is a sentient being other than consciousness. Furthermore, if there is no self other than just the aggregates, then I have seen form. If one thinks, "I shall see," one does not need to send one's own mind first, but rather one should send the mind of just the aggregates first. Because when one enters an object after sending the mind first, one must necessarily send one's own mind. There is a self other than just the aggregates. In short, the thought that it is a sentient being is a phenomenon. It enters as it is, because it is the mind that enters when one sees an object without sending the mind first. For example, it is said to be like grasping blue. The refutation of this is to be understood through ten meanings. For those who seek liberation in this, the object of attachment to the view of the perishable is completely refuted. If one must necessarily affirm only the individual, one should be skilled in the methods of refutation and establishment that are accomplished by reason. Otherwise, all compositions will become meaningless. If it is not to refute only the individual, then one might wonder what the difference is. In many sutras, it is said to refute the truly existent individual, and in the Compendium of Grounds, the ultimate truth, and in the Compendium of Determinations, and in the Ornament of the Sutras and the commentaries on the Treasury, it is said to refute substance. All of these have the same meaning. Therefore, the meaning of nominal and substantial is that for any phenomenon that appears as the object of consciousness, it must necessarily rely on the appearance of another basis that does not correspond to its own characteristic. This is nominally existent. That which appears independently without relying on such a thing is called substantially existent. First, without sending the mind first, when seeing things and so on, because one sees the mind of a sentient being arise, the refutation is of the view that sentient beings are substantially existent. Is it that after seeing the general object and so on, the mind of a sentient being arises on that very thing? Or is it that after seeing something else, it arises on that other thing? If it is the first case, then that mind becomes a mistaken consciousness, because that mind clings to that very thing as a sentient being, and a sentient being is established from something other than that. If it is the second case, then the situation where that mind arises after seeing only the object and so on itself disappears. Furthermore, by seeing what does the mind of a sentient being arise?

So, is the basis for the arising of consciousness the nature of sentient beings? Or is it other than that? If it is like the first case, then consciousness would become a reversed cognition, because consciousness arises independently in a way that is inconsistent with its nature. If it is like the latter case, then it must also be admitted that a pot is the cause for the arising of consciousness of cloth. Furthermore, does consciousness of sentient beings arise in what is not a sentient being? Or does it not? If it is not admitted, then this is obvious, because it is experienced that human consciousness arises in a high place. If it is admitted, then the previous argument used to prove that the consciousness of sentient beings operates as it is, is uncertain. Similarly, whether or not consciousness of non-sentient beings arises in sentient beings, and whether or not consciousness of other sentient beings arises in other sentient beings, should be examined and refuted, and it should be understood by the previous example. Furthermore, is the basis for the arising of consciousness of sentient beings manifest or hidden? If it is like the first case, then things and so on are equivalent to sentient beings, because other than that, there is no other manifest basis. If it is like the latter case, then when a young child enters without examination, consciousness of sentient beings will not arise. Second, if consciousness is put forward first and then examined, then the view that I exist by the arising of consciousness of sentient beings will be refuted later. Third, regarding attachment to the aggregates: Is the aggregate itself considered to be a sentient being? Or does it exist in the aggregates like a pile of mandalas? Or is it separate from the aggregates like a fallen arrow? Or do the aggregates not exist at all? If it is like the first case, then other things that exist independently from the aggregates will disappear. If it is like the second case, then is that person permanent or impermanent? If permanent, then happiness cannot bring benefit, and suffering cannot cause harm, so good and non-good actions will not be accumulated. In this way, since the body is not accepted, it becomes unnecessary to acknowledge that person. If impermanent, then the arising and ceasing that exists independently from the aggregates must also be pointed out, but since it is not pointed out, it is unreasonable. If it is like the third case, then that person will become unconditioned, because he exists independently from the aggregates. If admitted, then it will also become unnecessary. If it is like the fourth case, then liberation will be attained effortlessly, because there is no connection with any binder. Fourth, if the nature is distinguished: If there is a person other than just the aggregates, then he is the viewer and the listener, etc., and
