Notes on Teachings Arising from the Basis. Notes on Teachings Arising from the Basis. Herein are the Notes on Teachings Arising from the Basis. Secondly, regarding arising from the basis, if we speak in terms of roughly taking and abandoning the seventeen bases, there are three: causing one who has not obtained vows to obtain them, protecting what has been obtained so that it does not deteriorate, and repairing it after it has deteriorated. First, there are three: by what does one accomplish it, for whom does one accomplish it, and how does one accomplish it. First, by what does one accomplish it? These are the five: the Khenpo (Upadhyaya), the Acharya (preceptor), the secret revealer, the Sangha of petitioners, and the Bhikshu petitioner. First, the Khenpo (Upadhyaya) is: as a condition of being a monk, not defiled by the root downfall and abstaining from naturally blameworthy actions; as a condition of stability, having completed ten years without interruption after receiving full ordination; as a condition of being learned, knowing the Vinaya; as a condition of benefiting, being in accord with the view; possessing the three terms; the body abiding in ordinariness; the place abiding in its nature; possessing compassion; possessing patience; the inner circle being pure; striving for the benefit of Dharma and material things; admonishing at the proper time, thus possessing ten qualities. The Acharya (preceptor) is: the vows of full ordination being pure; being in accord with the view; possessing the three terms; the body abiding in ordinariness; the place abiding in its nature; being other than the Khenpo (Upadhyaya); if conferring the vows of a novice monk and full ordination, being skilled in the Karma ritual, thus possessing eight qualities. The secret revealer is the same as before up to abiding in its nature. In addition to that, being skilled in the ritual of asking about obstacles; at the time of appointment, not being driven by desire, hatred, fear, or delusion; the Sangha not being incomplete; being pleased when asked if pleased; not having been appointed before, thus possessing fourteen qualities. The Sangha of petitioners, complete in number by means of ten in the central region and five in the border region; being free from two disagreements; the place abiding in its nature; being near to hearing and abiding, thus possessing fourteen qualities. The Bhikshu petitioner is the same as above up to abiding in its nature. In addition to that, abiding within the boundary; being skilled in the ritual of petitioning, thus possessing nine qualities. Secondly, the favorable conditions of the place for whom one accomplishes it are: if a novice monk, being seven years old and able to scare away crows; if fully ordained, then...

If (a monk) is twenty years old, including abortion, does not possess the five definitive thoughts, knows how to obtain (the precepts), and possesses the thought of nirvana. Signs: If a novice, then upper garment, lower skirt, cushion, water strainer, and alms bowl. If fully ordained, then in addition to that, possessing a patchwork robe that can be sewn, complete from the measure to the complete appearance. Obstacles: Being free from the four obstacles such as the five heinous crimes. Third, how to perform the ritual: Through the three of preliminary, main, and concluding parts, learn from others. Second, the way to protect without losing after obtaining, there are three: relying on the guru, fully studying the precepts, and relying on the causes of peaceful dwelling to protect without losing. First, the way to rely on the guru: The guru should also possess the thirteen qualities as mentioned in the case of the abbot, and the disciple should possess respect for the guru, be able to restore the five classes of vows, be diligent in virtue, be careful in the guru's activities, have gentleness, and have patience, that is, possess six qualities, examine the characteristics of the guru, and abide by requesting with words, including the acharya: holding the two soles of the feet with the two palms of the hands, Venerable One, please listen, I, named so-and-so, pray to abide in the presence of the Venerable One, Venerable One, please grant me to abide, I will abide in the presence of the Venerable One. Say this three times and be skillful in means. The order of service: Do not call those who are not abbots and preceptors abbots and preceptors, do not use the combined term abbot and preceptor, do not mention the names of abbots and preceptors, especially for the sake of benefit, do not mention the name of the abbot without connecting it, and do not call the elders "venerable" or other intimate terms, but call them by their names directly. Monks in monasteries should not leave more than two fingers of hair, and those near villages should not leave more than one and a half fingers of hair, and "more" is interpreted as more than half a finger. While wearing the robes, do not shave hair and beard, for this purpose, the cloth for shaving hair, three cubits long and one and a half cubits wide, should also be for the purpose of covering the upper body, not for spreading. The front and back edges of the lower skirt should not be knotted, and should not be placed where the genitals are visible.
