Now it is seen. If so, although it is the same in considering the nature of reality as lineage, the reasons for establishing it as lineage are different because of the difference in whether or not to consider the basis for purifying defilements as true. Therefore, in the context of the Mind-Only school, it is said that defilements are exhausted from the beginning, but it is only said that they arise from the reason of reversal and have not entered the reality. It is not said to be merely a name imputed by the mind, as those who speak of emptiness of inherent existence, because that would be confusing. The non-exhaustion and non-arising of defilements is also a characteristic of this later view, so in this way, merely knowing that the object to be abandoned is empty of inherent existence is given the name of having been abandoned, but it is not considered that the object to be abandoned and the antidote are truly different entities. It is thought of as like a magical elephant defeating another magical elephant. If one does not know that this very profound realm is apprehended as conventional and fabricated and made into a distinction, but instead grasps it as being established in its own right, and some think of it as one and others as different, etc., then for the many conceptualizations that appear, only mental exhaustion remains as the result. Third, the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra* says that there are five types of lineages: the three vehicles, the uncertain lineage, and the severed lineage. The latter is only intended to be difficult to liberate, and it is impossible for the lineage to be completely severed, because if defilements cannot be abandoned, then it would follow that it is the nature of the mind. If that were the case, it would be impossible to transcend existence, like the heat of fire. Although it is said that the Mind-Only school believes in the severed lineage, this is only what is said in some provisional sūtras, and it is only making distinctions there, and it is not considered definitive. If they accept it, then they must accept that obscurations cannot be abandoned, which is also unreasonable. Because they believe that all defilements are adventitious. Fourth, the *Ornament* says: Qualities are to be understood for the sake of liberation. Like this, because qualities arise and originate from this, it is a lineage. Synonyms for the name are: In the *Yogācārabhūmi*, it says: That lineage is also called the ground, and it is also called the shower, cause, support, proximity, antecedent, and place. Those who, while admitting that the views of the *Sūtrālaṃkāra*, the Mind-Only school, and the Madhyamaka school on lineage are inconsistent, explain the distinctions of the lineage of the *Sūtrālaṃkāra* in their own system are mocking themselves. The second part has two parts: the divisions of lineage and

There is debate regarding the distinctions. The first has four points: "Combining the root explanation to summarize the meaning." It speaks of the lineage that serves as the basis for practice after the path of joining. Abiding in the lineage that possesses the practice of the dependent dharma, as previously stated, the preparatory stage of certainty and the path of seeing, etc., because other paths such as the path of meditation and the path of distinction will also arise. If the lineage precedes the arising of the mind of enlightenment, the part of liberation, and the part of certainty, then should the lineage be explained first? That is because explaining the cause first and the result later is the order of meaning. But this is explaining the result first, and then understanding that the cause of this result is like this, which is the order of explanation. The sutra connection is: Blessed One, Bodhisattva Bodhisattva, what is the meaning of this term called Bodhisattva Bodhisattva? Thus asked, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, the meaning of the word Bodhisattva is that there is no meaning to the word. Why? Because for enlightenment, there is no object of existence, whether it is birth or existence itself or non-existence itself. Subhuti, therefore, the meaning of the word Bodhisattva is that there is no meaning to the word. From the chapter on the arising of the mind of enlightenment onwards, in the path of joining and the path of seeing and meditation, the meaning of the word Bodhisattva, which is repeatedly spoken, is spoken as an answer to the question. This sutra, taking as its reason that the dependent or attainable enlightenment does not exist as a substance, shows that the lineage of the nature of the six internal sense bases (the six internal sense bases: eye base, ear base, nose base, tongue base, body base, mind base) is the reason why the sound of Bodhisattva applies, but the meaning of the word Bodhisattva does not become a real thing. The second is: The dharma that realizes selflessness, the four parts of certainty and the two paths of seeing and meditation, the basis of these six is called lineage, thus distinguishing and combining, and the same applies to the rest. Here, the meaning of the dependent and the supporting should not be thought of as like trees in a container or crops on the land. However, the reason for obtaining the thirteen stages of practice in sequence through the power of realizing that the nature of the six sense bases is free from elaboration is this. Among them, the basis of the heat stage is: Subhuti, it is like this, for example, there are no traces of birds in the sky, and it cannot be found. Subhuti, similarly, the mind of enlightenment.
