Nurpa and so on, these arise in sequence. Dependent on name and form, the sense bases arise, that is, dependent on the aggregation of the three: faculty, consciousness, and object, contact arises. Dependent on that, feeling arises, which experiences the three: pleasure, pain, and equanimity. Dependent on that, craving arises, that is, if it is a pleasant feeling, craving arises desiring to experience it without separation; if it is a painful feeling, craving arises desiring to abandon it; if it is an unlabelled feeling, craving arises desiring to remain in equanimity. Dependent on that, grasping arises, which actually experiences and accepts the object. Dependent on that, existence arises, which causes the suffering of falling into the lower realms and samsara. Dependent on that, the aggregates of the lower realms and birth arise. Dependent on that, aging and death arise, aging is the complete ripening of the body, death is the complete abandonment of the body. Furthermore, dependent on the ignorance, action, and consciousness of the previous life, name and form up to existence arise in this life. Dependent on that, the birth and aging and death of the previous life arise. Furthermore, dependent on the ignorance, action, and consciousness of this life, name and form up to existence of the future life arise. Dependent on that, the birth and aging and death of that future life arise. Likewise, know all previous and future lives. Thus, like the chain of a water bucket of the twelve links of dependent origination, all sentient beings involuntarily experience endless, unbearable suffering of samsara. Know that all of this arises solely dependent on self-grasping. Second, meditating on the reversal of dependent origination, since the nature of all the suffering of the lower realms and samsara is self-grasping, then all the suffering of the lower realms and samsara will cease by abandoning self-grasping. As long as self-grasping is not abandoned, then all suffering will arise continuously like a river, because the nature of all the causes and conditions of suffering—self-grasping—exists. For example, it is like how drops of water arise as long as the great outer ocean exists. So, self-grasping

Then, by what will it be abandoned? It will be abandoned by the wisdom that realizes selflessness. If you ask, can't other virtuous deeds besides that abandon it? Those deeds also become branches of clinging to self. Afflictions such as desire, hatred, jealousy, etc., merely temporarily become the cause of some afflictions. Moreover, through the merit of hearing and thinking, one becomes a great scholar, and arrogance arises from the pride of thinking, "I am a scholar"; Afflictions such as jealousy and competitiveness, contempt for the Dharma, and surpassing others in every way arise from relying on the merits of a scholar. Also, some people cultivate the cause of tranquility in solitary places and abide there. Whether the merit is small or great, through their own experience, arrogance arises from that, and they slander scholars and monks, etc., who do not reside in solitary places, and generate afflictions such as jealousy. Similarly, giving, keeping vows, cultivating patience, exerting effort, meditating, and whatever other virtuous deeds one may do, these are merely antidotes to afflictions and temporarily produce some fruits of happiness, but they do not attain ultimate happiness, liberation, and omniscience, nor do they abandon all obscurations, because they lack the wisdom that realizes selflessness. Therefore, other virtuous deeds besides the wisdom that realizes selflessness cannot abandon self-grasping, and as long as one relies on the aggregates of self-grasping, as long as there is self-grasping, there is no opportunity to be liberated from the suffering of the lower realms of samsara. The noble Nagarjuna also said, "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, so long will self-grasping exist. If self-grasping exists, then karma exists; from that (karma) birth will again occur." Also, the teacher Chandrakirti said, "First, clinging to the self with the name 'I,' and generating attachment to things with the name 'mine,' like a water wheel, involuntarily, to the one who has compassion for beings, I prostrate."
