Notes on the Second Examination of the Tantra. Notes on the Second Examination of the Tantra. Here are the notes on the Second Examination of the Tantra. I respectfully prostrate to the feet of the Lama and glorious Hevajra. Regarding this Second Examination of the Tantra, two views arose in India: one claiming that the Second Examination was extracted from the extensive tantra, and the other claiming that the separate tantra is a condensed tantra. As stated in the "Pearl Garland": "Regarding the words of introduction, such as 'Thus have I heard,' some say: 'Because it is another condensed tantra.' Others say: 'This Second Examination was extracted from the great tantra, and having condensed and placed it as it is, it was extracted here together with the words of introduction.'" Thus it is said, but it does not state whether its own system is correct. In the commentary of Bhava Bhadra: "That which is called Hevajra is indeed another tantra, and it is not extracted from the great Hevajra." This is correct, because if the Vajra Essence Bodhicitta and the Illusion Examination are used separately as stated in the Ghantapada Tantra, then the statement in the twelfth examination above would be unreasonable, and even if it were extracted from the end, it would be harmful due to the different names. Therefore, the meaning of extracting from the thirty-second examination refers to the condensed tantra that is abridged from the extensive tantra. There are two very prevalent explanatory traditions for such a tantra: the commentary on the Vajra Essence and the view of its followers, and the Indian teachings that arose before the three commentary cycles arrived in India. Among the many commentaries translated into Tibetan from the latter, here, the system relies heavily on the commentary of Amitabha Chandra, which upholds the teachings of Padmasambhava and Dombi Heruka. Regarding the view of Suchness in this tantra, there are two ways of explaining it: Shantipa and his followers explain it as Mind-Only (Cittamatra), while Padmasambhava, Amitabha Chandra, Bhava Bhadra, and others explain it as Madhyamaka. Here, the Madhyamaka view is adopted, which is the intent of the tantra, as stated in the root tantra: "In all instances of teaching Suchness, refer to the Prajnaparamita Sutra and its intent."

As it is said in the commentaries of Nagarjuna's treatises, it is taught without differentiation as devoid of inherent existence, and at no time is it divided into three inherent existences, because there has not arisen even a slight inclination to think that the imputed is merely empty of its own characteristics, while the other two exist by their own characteristics. Moreover, in the explanatory lineage of this treatise, the Guhyasamaja Tantra also says: "In conventional truth, the world exists. When examined with wisdom, where is the world? It always abides in the world. This is the teaching of the path to enlightenment." In this way, it accurately explains the doctrine of speaking of non-inherent existence in terms of existence and non-existence in the two truths. Moreover, the main disciples to be tamed by this treatise are sharper in their faculties than the main disciples to be tamed by the Perfection of Wisdom Vehicle, and the Mind-Only can also be established as the correct meaning. So, what is the school of this treatise, in terms of whether or not external objects exist in name? And which is it that speaks of the eight or six aggregates of consciousness? To this, Tso Kye and Mi Thup Zla Wa have not clearly explained. Bhava Bhatta has interpreted it as the school of Yogacara Madhyamaka, and Man Nyer has also interpreted it in the same way. On this, the sixth chapter of the Guhyasamaja Tantra says: "That which is external to the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no sentient being. The meaning of abiding and the various consciousnesses, there is no external appearance. In the three realms, the great powerful one, all the Buddhas are made by the mind. In the three realms, the great king, is attained by the single mind alone. Form and sound and likewise smell, taste and tangible objects that arise, are all expressions of this precious mind, and are pacified in the supreme Dharma realm. Form and feeling and perception, formation and consciousness itself, all are the nature of this mind, and the Sage has not spoken of them as other." It also says: "The nature of objects and faculties, although there is no external object apart from the mind, the various appearances of form and so on, are only appearances of the mind itself." Then, Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva asked the Tathagatas: "Bhagavan, how do all the Tathagatas, in the non-empty external object, how does the empty mind appear?" The Tathagatas replied: "From the beginningless continuum, it is established as the meaning of external object."
