Notes on the Root Text of the Vinaya Notes on the Root Text of the Vinaya Pages 1 to 100 ༄༅། །Notes on the Root Text of the Vinaya. From indicating the basis, the person, thereby causing him to learn, there are two, namely, teaching the ethics of abstaining. Therein, there are two: the individual and the general teachings. In the individual, there are also two distinctions. In the first teaching, there are two: the ritual of offering vows and the definition of transgressions. In the first, there are two: the general meaning is that in order to generate the five categories of transgressions, one needs to have received full ordination and not have relinquished it after receiving it. The first is the basis of ordination, and the second is the actual chapter of offering and teaching implicitly. Therefore, it is taught as the first of the five categories. Furthermore, in order to protect by recognizing the opposing side, there are two: violating the general vows and violating the individual vows. This is because it violates the general vows, and therefore it is said to be taught first because it is the main topic of discussion. The reason why this is made into a separate chapter from non-celibacy is to realize that all other transgressions also need the opposite of this. If it is made one with non-celibacy, it will be understood as its own dharma. Taking this as an example, there are four ways to determine what to give up. There are two types of distinctions: the common one is, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Offering vows, death, two genders, arising, cutting off the root, and the end of the sign, the Vinaya of individual liberation is abandoned." These are the five that are taught. In the uncommon one, Changing the name three times, knowing there when not attained, the decline of the true dharma, the occurrence of a root downfall, these are said to be four. From the explanation in the Abhidharma, whether it is common or not is determined by the general intention of one's own school and the individual intention. Since there is no disagreement with the former five, it is the common of each. In the individual intention, "Some say it arises from transgression, others from the decline of the true dharma, the Kashmiris regard it as the wealth of a creditor." These are the three that are taught. Among them, abandoning due to the occurrence of defeat is also asserted by the Sutra school and the venerable teacher, the Holy Brother. However, although the decline of the true dharma is accepted by the Red Robe sect, it is not abandoning what was previously obtained because of the reason that one cannot obtain the vows that were not previously obtained. The venerable Holy Brother says so. Name many times
