The Novice Monk's Discipline - Celestial Garden The Novice Monk's Discipline - Celestial Garden ༄༅། །The Novice Monk's Discipline - Celestial Garden Homage to the All-Knowing One! The five categories of offenses for a fully ordained monk (bhikshu) become three types for a novice monk (shramanera). Namely, some are offenses that transgress the vows taken, some are similar offenses, and some do not constitute offenses. Among the offenses that transgress the vows taken, there are thirty-six in number. The first of these is "the four killings, etc.," where killing a human being is a transgression similar to a defeat (parajika). Its components include: basis, intention, action, and completion. The first aspect has two parts: the support and the object. The support is a novice monk who possesses pure vows, or is capable of restoring them, whose consciousness is in a natural state, and who was not a novice monk before taking the vows. The object is a human being or one who has taken human form. Intention is divided into two: recognition and motivation. Recognition is recognizing a human being or one who has taken human form as such, or having doubts about it. Motivation is the continuous intention to kill that being. Action is oneself or through an agent attempting to kill by any means, such as poison or weapons. Completion is when the life force is cut off, which constitutes a transgression similar to a defeat. In short, apart from the defeat-like transgression of killing, all physical and verbal offenses motivated by the desire to kill a human being or a non-human being other than an animal are included in the transgressions to be confessed. The second is striking beings, including animals, which is a transgression to be confessed. Its components include the basis and the limbs. The support is the same as above. The object is a living being belonging to the animal realm, visible to ordinary eyes, and possessing life. Intention is divided into two: recognizing that it is a sentient being, or having doubts about it. Motivation is the continuous intention to strike sentient beings for the benefit of others. Action is oneself or through an agent attempting to strike sentient beings for the benefit of others. Completion is that as many sentient beings die, one confesses for each of them. The third is treating beings, including animals, which is a transgression to be confessed, the basis, limbs, etc., are the same as above. The motivation is the desire to treat them for one's own personal benefit. The action is oneself or through an agent, oneself

Efforts are made solely for this purpose. Fourth, confessing the offense of killing animals has four points: the basis remains as before. The object is sentient beings belonging to the place of birth of animals, which is without basis. The thought is: to recognize it as an animal, or to have doubts. The motivation is: to want to kill it, and to be continuous. The action is: to try to kill it by oneself or by assigning someone, with weapons or anything else. The ultimate is: at the time when the life force ceases. Stealing has four points: the basis is, the basis of the limb remains as before. The object is the object of stealing: it is a person, and it is different from one's own possessions. The thing to be stolen is: in that place and time, through one action, it has value for both the thief and the one being stolen from. It is not food that is owned and controlled by people, nor is it the belongings of a cemetery that are suddenly possessed by executioners, etc., so it is not inferior. The thought is: not confusing the general and the specific. The motivation is: although it belongs to others, even if it is not given, one wants to be permanently separated for one's own survival, and it is continuous. The action is: to try to steal by oneself or by assigning someone. The ultimate is: at the time when the thought of obtaining arises. Apart from the offense similar to defeat of taking what is not given, all the physical and verbal offenses caused by the mind of stealing belong to this and need to be confessed. Regarding non-celibacy, there are two points: the basis and the limb. The basis of what one strives with is: it is a jewel, related to one's own continuum, can be used, and is free from disease. The object of what one strives for is: the three paths, and the two bodies in which they reside. The three paths are: the mouth, the path of excrement, and the first boundary above the three directions of the woman's excretory path, which has not been damaged by disease, etc. The body in which they reside is a complete body, or the upper or lower part of the body is complete, and can be used as a basis. That is, whether it is a dead or alive body, human or non-human, male or female, hermaphrodite, any wound in one's own or another's body is similar to causing defeat. There are two thoughts: recognition is the same or not the same. The motivation is: to want to possess the touch of the meeting of the path and the limb, and it is continuous. The action is: to strive in that way for the purpose of the thought. The ultimate is
