Know that, because the state of being able to distinguish between what is and is not is lacking, I will here reveal the faults of these: If one does not understand that emptiness, which is originally empty and without self, free from the four extremes or eight elaborations, is the very nature of awareness, this present awareness that transcends thought and is naturally free, but instead, according to the lower vehicles, analyzes with the mind of existence and non-existence, affirmation and negation, and considers it to be the emptiness of nothingness afterwards, or like the lower tantras, purifies into emptiness with mantras of svabhava (Tibetan: སྭ་བྷ་ཝ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: स्वभाव, Sanskrit Romanization: svabhāva, Chinese literal meaning: self-nature), and merely acknowledges it as the clarity-emptiness of samadhi, and experiences it like the view of illusion, then it is wrong. Similarly, the ground is the cessation of subtle and coarse thoughts in their own place, the state of mind itself being free from the waves of movement and thought, and remaining clear and bright, if one does not understand that this is self-knowing and self-illuminating, but understands it as remaining in a state of mindless stupor, then it is wrong. Lhagthong (superior seeing) is the nature of awareness of both abiding and moving recognizing their own nature, this is clear knowing without grasping, if one does not understand this, but uses thought to analyze abiding and moving, then there is error. Although there are various views on what is called samatha and vipassana, in the self-language of Dzogchen, abiding in the state of being aware of the nature of whatever appears is called samatha; and that which transforms, changes, etc., in the state of awareness is vipassana. If one does not understand this, but calls the state of focusing on the view of emptiness samatha, and after rising from that state, expands the emptiness of whatever appears as illusion, and calls it vipassana, then it is wrong. Non-distraction is not being controlled by distracted thoughts, not falling into a state of non-mentation, but refers to genuine original awareness, if one guards against the fear of distraction, or is bound by the oppression of suffering and attachment, then it is wrong. Ordinary awareness is the natural state of present awareness that is not defiled by any good or bad, guarding it with the continuity of awareness, if one does not understand this, but identifies worldly thoughts as self-nature, then it is wrong. Non-meditation is entering into the state of the original condition, thereby eliminating the attachment to meditation and non-meditation, without any fabrication or object for the mind, abiding in vast awareness, not referring to the ordinary mind of letting go of everything, or falling into a state of non-mentation where nothing is anything, then it is wrong. What is called guarding whatever appears is staring intently at the thoughts of whatever appears.

It is not about negating through observation, nor is it about examining and researching it, nor is it about following it. Rather, it is about not understanding that one should release the one who generates conceptual thoughts onto themselves, allowing them to abide, change, and become transparent. If one arbitrarily follows any arising thought and engages in thinking and observation, then one is mistaken. Similarly, there are three deviations: if one clings to comfort, one will be reborn as a god in the desire realm; if one clings to clarity, one will be reborn as a god in the form realm; if one clings to non-thought, one will be reborn as a god in the formless realm, hence they are called deviations. If we explain the recognition and errors regarding this: "comfort" refers to the experience of joy and happiness that is not defiled by the three great fundamental sufferings, and is like being unable to separate from that state. It does not refer to the pleasure of contaminated desire, or the feeling of happiness and joyful thoughts that are transformed by external circumstances. "Clarity" refers to the power or manifestation of awareness that is not defiled by obstacles such as dullness or sinking, and is clear without obstruction. It does not refer to the appearance of colors, shapes, etc. of external objects, which are the self-nature of illusory appearances. "Non-thought" refers to the non-thought that is free from the movement and disturbance of conceptual thoughts, such as non-movement, nine movements, complete attachment, and confused thoughts, and is like the sky. It does not refer to the cessation of sensation like fainting, or the darkness like deep sleep. In short, if one does not understand that these three experiences also arise naturally as manifestations of the signs of the path, and if one hopes for them to exist and deliberately cultivates them, and clings to and becomes attached to the arising experiences, then one will not escape the cause of falling into the three realms. Similarly, there are four places of loss: losing emptiness in the nature of knowable objects, losing emptiness on the path, losing emptiness as an antidote, and losing emptiness as a means of proliferation. And it is said that each of these can be divided into two types: original loss and temporary loss. But if we summarize it as a whole, if one does not understand the essence of ultimate emptiness, which is originally pure, liberated from the bonds of fabricated phenomena and conceptual constructs, and the key point of the present awareness being primordially pure and vast, and if one seeks emptiness separately, like proliferating appearances with emptiness, then one is lost in the nature. Similarly, if one does not trust in the path of ordinary awareness of self-awareness, and the cause
