The Uncommon Preliminary Guide of the Great Perfection Longchen Nyingtik, "Mindfulness, the Near Approach." The Uncommon Preliminary Guide of the Great Perfection Longchen Nyingtik, "Mindfulness, the Near Approach." The Uncommon Preliminary Guide of the Great Perfection Longchen Nyingtik, "Mindfulness, the Near Approach" is completed. I prostrate to the self-arisen, primordial realm! Having made the mind workable through the seven common preliminaries of mind training, and having opened the door with the uncommon and extraordinary preliminaries, in order to establish the supreme rank of the King of Light, the Supreme Vehicle, the Heart Essence of the Great Perfection of Self-Nature, I am disgusted by the fact that the teachings of the Heart Essence have become like a butter lamp in a painting because of the many levels of guidance methods. Therefore, I vow to uphold the intention of the master of this Supreme Vehicle teaching, the King of Conquerors, Longchen Rabjam (Longchenpa), and to revive the foundation of the teachings. First, regarding taking refuge, there are three aspects: distinguishing the differences, the manner of taking refuge, and contemplating the benefits. First: Thus, if one takes refuge in the Three Jewels out of fear of the suffering of the three lower realms and seeks only the happiness of the higher realms of good rebirth, it is called a small person, because there is nothing other than seeking temporary happiness as a result. If one takes refuge in the Three Jewels out of fear of the suffering of samsara and seeks only peace and happiness for oneself, it is called a medium person, because one aims only at the result of oneself being liberated from samsara. If one sees the suffering of other sentient beings in endless samsara and takes refuge in the Three Jewels in order to liberate them from samsara, it is called a great person, because one aims at desiring Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Therefore, one should turn away from the qualities of small and medium people and train to follow the great person for the benefit of all sentient beings, thus adjusting one's motivation. Second, the manner of taking refuge: That is, according to the common vehicle, one takes refuge by regarding the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the refuge, and the Sangha as the companion in accomplishing the path, and the uncommon.

Furthermore, in the general manner of Secret Mantra, taking refuge by offering the three doors to the Guru, relying on the Yidam, and taking the Dakinis as companions, and especially in the supreme method of the Vajra Essence tradition: relying on the Root Nirmanakaya, purifying the Sambhogakaya with winds, and taking refuge in the swift path of purifying the Dharmakaya with Bindus, and the ultimate, infallible Refuge of Reality Vajra is to cultivate and recite the wisdom essence of emptiness, self-luminous nature, and all-pervasive compassion, the indivisible three, residing in the heart streams of those objects of refuge, as the object of practice in one's own continuum. Having familiarized oneself with such a state, the actual visualization is: this place where one is sitting is a beautiful and pleasing pure land made of various jewels, in the center of which is a wish-fulfilling tree with five branches, abundant with leaves, flowers, and fruits, adorned with precious ornaments, bells, and so on, filling the expanse of the sky. In the center of that, on a precious throne supported by lions, on a seat stacked with various lotuses, suns, and moons, is the embodiment of all Buddhas, the root Guru Orgyen Vajradhara, in union with his consort, with the Gurus of the Great Perfection lineage stacked above. Yidams, heroes, and Dakinis surround them from all sides. On the branch in front is Buddha Shakyamuni with all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, on the branch to the right is the Sangha of Bodhisattvas, the eight close sons, on the branch to the left is the Sangha of Shravakas, such as the supreme pair, the assembly of noble ones, and on the branch in the back is the Dharma Jewel, in the form of stacked scriptures, proclaiming the natural sound of A আলি(藏文,梵文天城体,ā li,vowels) and Ka 까리(藏文,梵文天城体,kā li,consonants). All the spaces in between are filled without interruption by the ocean of Dharma protectors and oath-bound ones, born from wisdom and action. All of these, with immeasurable qualities of wisdom, love, and power, cherish me and abide as the great guide of guidance. With parents and harm-doers at the head, all sentient beings, self and other, join their palms from the surface of the earth, and with intense longing, from this time until the heart of enlightenment, rely on you, offer to you, and have no other refuge or hope than you.
