Since the very ground is beyond expression, the name "Primordial Protector" is merely a conventional term applied to the inconceivable Samantabhadra. Therefore, wherever discriminating wisdom arises in samsara or nirvana, it is said that samsara and nirvana turn their backs on each other, because two paths arise from one ground. O Vajra of Realization! The essence of all Buddhas, the Primordial Protector, the Bhagavan, known as glorious Samantabhadra, if one thinks that the realm of sentient beings, like an ocean, is gathered by other lineages, then the connecting link between samsara and nirvana will be severed. Because sentient beings are separated from the seed of Buddhahood, the teachings that show the two accumulations as vast as the ocean will also become meaningless. Therefore, in my own nature, the Great Perfection, there is liberation from the beginning, and there are two paths of delusion, so be skilled in the way the ground abides. Thus, being completely liberated from all the stains of one's own face, and knowing the dharma that arises spontaneously in the realms of Buddhas and sentient beings from the two parts entangled by karma and afflictions, do not expect me, Samantabhadra, to be gathered by other lineages, or seek a false, artificial Buddha in the illusory appearance. Thus it was said. From the Great Perfection, the Tantra of the Wisdom Space of Samantabhadra: The Second Chapter, which teaches the parting of ways between samsara and nirvana. Again, the Vajra of Realization asked: How are the aggregates of consciousness, mind, and the distinctions of the afflicted mind differentiated? The Blessed One replied: From the alaya, when the display of one's own energy stirs and consciousness attempts to engage with an object, the alaya consciousness arises. For example, from the alaya realm, like a deep sleep, one awakens. The objects of the five senses do not actually appear. A very subtle apprehending consciousness arises, which spontaneously evokes the interdependent connection of holding the image of universal thought, like a mirror. Then, through the activity of the root-winds of the five gates, consciousness is led to the object: form in the realm of the eye, sound in the realm of the ear, smell in the realm of the nose, taste in the realm of the tongue, and touch in the realm of the body, thus the five aggregates of consciousness arise. They generate attachment, aversion, and ignorance with the nature of afflicted mind and mind.

Grasping onto 'mother' and so forth, ignorance, which is the cause of samsara, as well as karma, habitual tendencies, and results, are all included within it. In short, because it becomes like a container or basis for everything, it is the Alaya (ཀུན་གཞི,梵文:ālayavijñāna,梵文罗马拟音:ālayavijñāna,meaning: ground of all). From the aspect of understanding, it is the manifestation of Alaya-consciousness. From the aspect of it looking outward and being aware of objects, it is the five sense consciousnesses. From the aspect of taking up afflictions from its own ground, it is the afflicted mind. From the aspect of distinguishing various things, it is the mind consciousness. In summary, it is called the eight consciousnesses. Again, it was asked: If that is the case, since these realms of appearance are illusory, how is it that all sentient beings perceive places, houses, and so forth as a single, real thing? The answer was given: For those who are realized, the appearance of illusion has never existed. For those who are not realized, in general, the six types of beings each have their own distinct appearances. Even for the same water, gods see it as nectar (ལྷས་བདུད་རྩི,梵文:amṛta,梵文罗马拟音:amrita, meaning: immortality), hell beings see it as pus and blood (དམྱལ་བས་མེ་མདག,梵文:rakta,梵文罗马拟音:rakta, meaning: blood), and hungry ghosts see it as pus and blood, etc. The appearances of the six types of beings are different. These places and types, gathered by their respective karmic appearances and abilities, as well as the appearances of the realms, senses, and minds, are merely a rough, shared experience of illusion. If measured from the perspective of realization and non-realization, such appearances are also unreasonable. For example, for a yogi who abides equally in the nature of reality, mountains, houses, and so forth appear, but they do not give rise to thoughts of grasping onto them. Therefore, appearance and mind are in a state of oneness, like birds flying in the sky, ducks swimming in the water, or siddhas passing through rocks, all of which arise from appearance without grasping. Therefore, the nature of mind, the All-Creating King Samantabhadra, meaning: universal good), is hidden invisibly in the space of the Alaya, existing as the basis of all of samsara and nirvana. From the basis, the basis appears as great luminosity, and although it appears limitlessly, it is not connected to objects, not obscured by itself, not defiled by grasping, not bound by the apprehended, and having abandoned all obscurations of the knower and the known, it attains enlightenment in the realm of the Dharmakaya. From the basis, wisdom arises and transforms into the mind consciousness, accompanied by the great demon of grasping and apprehended, and having understood this great flaw that serves as the basis for karma and habitual tendencies, I, Samantabhadra, have not done even a particle of contaminated virtue, yet I am the ancestor of all Buddhas.
