Treatise Collection, Chapter Fourteen: A Discussion on the Conventional and Ultimate Truths, The Divine Royal Drum. Treatise Collection, Chapter Fourteen: A Discussion on the Conventional and Ultimate Truths, The Divine Royal Drum. A Discussion on the Conventional and Ultimate Truths, entitled The Divine Royal Drum. Homage to glorious Vajra Sharp! Herein are two topics: a general discussion of knowable objects and knowing subjects, and a consideration of direct doubts. First, in order for a person with a special basis to attain the state of omniscience, it is necessary to realize the meaning of emptiness without perversion. Otherwise, the other five paths, such as generosity, are gathered in a way that is similar to being blind, as it is said: "Blind people without eyes, billions and trillions in number, do not know the path, how can they enter the city? Likewise, these five perfections without the eye of wisdom, without eyes, cannot touch enlightenment." Thus it is. Nevertheless, if one obtains the courage to debate and respond for the sake of examining the knowledge that is close to the true meaning, without the perverted intention of praising oneself and subduing others, then both are victorious activities, so one should look at them with an equanimous mind. In this regard, the teacher Lord Nāgārjuna said: "If one views emptiness incorrectly, those of little wisdom will be destroyed, just as a snake is wrongly grasped, and a mantra is practiced in reverse." Although this is cited as a definitive statement to counteract the ignorance that is deluded about suchness, the ignorance newly created by intention makes all ordinary beings unruly, and when the ultimate truth, which is not nominal, remains as an object of knowledge, pride and arrogance increase, so even the wise should abandon the imputation of existence or non-existence to the nature of the knowing subject. As it is said in the Sutra on the Inconceivable Realm of the Buddhas: "Attainment is called wavering, realization is called arrogance, whatever wavering and arrogance are, that is the work of demons. Those with excessive pride will discriminate, 'I have attained,' 'I have realized.'" Thus it is said. In this regard, among the four philosophical schools of inner Buddhism,

Now, the view of the Great Perfection is the same in the ultimate state of realization. Regarding this, in the causal vehicle, it is the Perfection of Wisdom; in general, in the Mantra path, it is the supreme accomplishment of the Great Seal; and in the path of means, it is the co-emergent wisdom. These stable assertions, even when measured from the highest philosophical standpoint, the very mind that measures is tainted by the outflows of the aggregates, mixed with the eight consciousnesses, and disturbed by biased conceptual intellect. Therefore, it projects the knowable away from its true nature. Thus, in accordance with the lower philosophical systems, one must first separate the five aggregates from the mind that grasps them, as the Bhagavan said: 'Monks, form is not self. If form were self, form would not be subject to harm and suffering. Moreover, one should be able to say of form: Let my form be like this, let it not be like that.' However, form is not self, therefore form is subject to harm and suffering. Moreover, one does not have the power to say of form: Let my form be like this, let it not be like that.' This should be applied analogously to the other four aggregates. In this way, all views of the perishable aggregates, which are of the nature of grasping, are pacified, and the aggregates of consciousness, which appear as objects and subjects, naturally dissolve, thereby directly seeing the noble truth. At that time, one realizes the non-dual, free from elaboration, self-arisen wisdom, or directly realizes the self-nature of the samadhi of the first ground. Otherwise, regarding the profound nature of reality, analyzing and examining it with the wisdom of hearing and thinking, thereby gaining great conviction, and abiding in the state of decisiveness that is free from the extremes of existence and non-existence, this is merely the nature of conventional mind or wisdom. As it is said in the sutra: 'How should one practice the path?' The Buddha taught: 'Do not discriminate between dharma and non-dharma, practice the path that is free from characteristics.' Shantideva also said: 'Ultimate reality is not the object of mind, mind is said to be conventional truth.' Some, unable to bear these scriptures, claim that there is a special mind, which is truly confused about even the definition of conventional truth. Because 'conventional' ('kun' in Tibetan) refers to all deluded appearances of mind, and 'truth' ('dzob' in Tibetan) refers to
