Thus, in accordance with the sacred command, it was accepted and upheld. So it is. In the second meaning, there are four schools of thought: the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika, which uphold the Hinayana Shravaka scriptures; and the Chittamatra and Madhyamaka, which uphold the Mahayana Bodhisattva pitaka. Whichever of the four schools one adheres to, the first two consider the Buddha's words to be ultimate, and those who diligently practice the thoughts and actions described in their treatises are Hinayana practitioners. The latter two consider the Buddha's words to be ultimate, and those who diligently practice the thoughts and actions described therein are considered Mahayana practitioners. Therefore, merely holding the treatises of a particular school does not qualify one as a Mahayana or Hinayana person. If one is ignorant of these three establishments and has not generated even a single quality of the path in their being, then no matter what religion or school they claim to belong to, that person is not even worthy of being called a Mahayana or Hinayana practitioner, let alone a non-Buddhist, because they lack the ability to reason about the causes and effects of higher rebirth and definite goodness. Therefore, anyone who has entered the path must at least know the distinction between Mahayana and Hinayana, for otherwise there is no reason to trust in mere religious affiliation. As it is said in the Differentiation: "Most Dharma practitioners today do not practice the three trainings, therefore it is not the Dharma of the Paramitas; since they do not possess empowerment and stages, it is not the teaching of the Vajrayana; since they do not know the Vinaya Pitaka, it is not even the Dharma of the Shravakas. Yet, they claim to be Dharma practitioners, alas, to whose teaching do they belong?" As it is said. Therefore, our teacher, being skillful in means, did not from the beginning show his own doctrine in an arbitrary way, but rather, through asceticism and meditation, he was in accordance with those who could distinguish non-Buddhists and did not conceal their lineage, thereby bringing other doctrines under his control. However, he himself, from beginningless time, was accustomed to practicing stainless wisdom, and finally manifested the form of enlightenment. Although he wished to lead all those to be tamed to such a state, since beings are group-oriented, in order to gradually lead them on the path, (he first taught) mind and mental factors, mental factors and objects, and form, etc.

It is merely established by designation. Although the Sarvastivada school, which holds that consciousness arises from truly established objects and faculties, is considered very coarse, it is said to be capable of gradually attaining liberation because it distinguishes itself from the eternal, independent, single self posited by non-Buddhists. The Kashmir Sarvastivadins, for example, believe that conditioned phenomena are impermanent, disintegrating in an instant, and that the self of a person is merely a conceptual construct, not substantially existent, making their view superior to the former. The Sautrantikas, however, consider coarse continuums such as forms and the continuum of consciousness to be unreal. They regard past and future phenomena, unconditioned phenomena, and non-associated compositional factors as merely nominal designations. They assert that only present particles and momentary consciousness are indivisible and truly established. The eye-consciousness does not directly see form; the appearance of seeing is the arising of a form-image in the eye-consciousness, known as the form-aspect, which becomes knowledge. Moreover, they believe that the appearance of an aspect implies the existence of external objects, such as forms, that cause the aspect to arise. The Mind-Only school believes that although objects such as forms appear to exist externally, they are merely appearances of the internal apprehending consciousness. They do not exist externally, like forms in a dream. Therefore, although external objects do not exist, the apprehending consciousness, which is the cause of the appearance of form in the apprehended aspect, sees itself. Thus, the truly established aspect-consciousness that appears as an external object is considered to be merely the reversal of the nature of that consciousness, the wisdom of non-duality of grasper and grasped. Although they claim to have refuted the grasper and grasped in their own system, they merely assert the absence of a separate entity of grasper and grasped by separating the nature of the grasper from the aspect-consciousness that appears as an object distinct from consciousness. The Great Madhyamaka, which is the pinnacle of the four philosophical schools, considers the five aggregates such as forms, the eight aggregates of consciousness which are the nature of mind, associated compositional factors, conditioned phenomena, unconditioned phenomena such as space, and all phenomena designated as non-entities to be conventional truths. They consider the absence of true existence of those natures to be ultimate truth. Although the two are distinct only in designation, they are in essence inexpressible as either one or different, and are neither existent nor non-existent.
