Verse Collection, Chapter Fifty-Seven: A Sharp Tool for Discerning the Points of Conversation Arising from Mindfulness and Awareness. Verse Collection, Chapter Fifty-Seven: A Sharp Tool for Discerning the Points of Conversation Arising from Mindfulness and Awareness. This is called A Sharp Tool for Discerning the Points of Conversation Arising from Mindfulness and Awareness. Homage to the Eternal Vajra. Gonze Tulku Rinpoche has summarized the answers to various questions that are mainly about meditation into one: Regarding the aspect of mindfulness that is tight mindfulness. Observing the continuity of thinking "I must not be distracted," and similarly, the knowing that thinks "Now there is a continuity of mindfulness, it is indeed non-distraction," is said to be what must be done as the essence of meditation. Except for those who are of the sudden type, most others need to use this method when initially cultivating calm abiding. To eliminate its faults, one must naturally relax as much as possible from the state of just being non-distracted, just as it is said, "Tighten with a squeeze, and loosen with relaxation." This is not the same as the Great Perfection's mindfulness becoming the essence of meditation. Also, when strong attachment and aversion arise, it is difficult for them to immediately disappear by looking at their essence, because one is too accustomed to attachment and aversion that should be abandoned in lifetimes. The mindfulness of the antidote is only occasional now, and it has become an artificial mindfulness. Since the strength of what should be abandoned and the antidote are not balanced, it will not work any other way for a while. This will not become the fault of deliberately blocking thoughts, and it is not unnecessary either. Just like when learning crafts such as writing and sculpture, although they do not meet the standard at first, if one works hard at it, they will gradually meet the standard. So it is said, it is not meditation, but habit. Habit becomes space. This saying is true. When thoughts naturally arise and naturally dissolve, what should be abandoned and the antidote become one taste, so even the thoughts of attachment and aversion arise as naturally devoid of inherent existence from the beginning. But it will not happen like that at first. Therefore, when a movement is felt, the thought does not endure the face of mindfulness, but lightly and clearly disappears, and that is not a mistake in the key of relying on the continuity of mindfulness. Even if the nature of attachment and aversion does not subside, but for it, not just grasping and clinging like ordinary people, but accumulating selflessness and emptiness, that is enough for now. The special characteristic of Great Perfection is mindfulness and self-meditation.

The so-called "completeness in one's own nature" refers to maintaining the continuity of the natural state in the stream of momentary mindfulness, without the need for tightening, loosening, alteration, abandonment, or adoption. How do mindfulness and awareness arise like cause and effect? Generally, mindfulness and awareness are frequently mentioned in all meditation texts. I understand that mindfulness here refers to the mindfulness of formation. For example, taking the three trainings of individual liberation vows, Bodhisattva vows, and mantra vows, as well as the pure mindfulness of the generation stage, as the basis of mindfulness, and establishing awareness to ensure that their state does not diminish. Similarly, taking the view of conceptual mind, the realm of non-elaboration, as mindfulness, and then maintaining its continuity with awareness is like the cause and effect of before and after. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "When mindfulness dwells at the gate of the mind, abiding for the sake of protection, then awareness will arise, and even what has passed will return." Great Perfection is the unity of view and practice, therefore, without cultivating the mindfulness of view and the awareness of practice as two separate parts, mindfulness itself is complete in the nature of Samadhi, therefore, awareness is seen as an obstacle to what is to be known, so there is no cause and effect of before and after. The reason for this is: if there is mindfulness, then the awareness that surpasses it is the defilement of the mind; if there is no mindfulness, then the knower without the known is a defect. As it was said before: "Thieves without awareness, follow the loss of mindfulness." This is clear. However, as long as the true nature has not been realized as it is, the mindfulness that clings to emptiness, and the awareness that thinks it is constantly present, are the view and practice of conceptual mind, because they are the four that go everywhere and the two that change, that is, they are not separated from the wisdom of mental factors. If awareness is considered the result of mindfulness, then when abiding in the definitive meaning, mindfulness becomes the knowable and awareness becomes the knower, and the obscuration of the two aspects of practice cannot be removed. However, this is possible for the image of the definitive meaning, which has the mindfulness of formation, because the mindfulness to be seen and the awareness of seeing appear as two different minds. As it was said before: "Those who have a mind without awareness, their hearing, thinking, and meditation are also like a broken-necked vase."
