Collection of Discourses, Chapter Four: The Discourse on Examining Precious Jewels, The Treasury of Cintamani. Collection of Discourses, Chapter Four: The Discourse on Examining Precious Jewels, The Treasury of Cintamani. The Discourse on Examining Precious Jewels, called The Treasury of Cintamani. Homage to the Buddha! From the appearance of the Victorious One until the Lord of the Nagas, the wheel of reading and practice has not been weary. The wheel of activities of the monastic college and the supports of body, speech, and mind is also like the waxing moon. In this land of snow mountains, the deity with great mental strength, the teachings and realizations of the three ancestral kings, and the three precious jewels of meditation places and Dharma wheels, who can bear to close the door to the filled biographies? Whoever this place is a source of precious jewels, and craftsmanship is the discriminating means of emanation, relying on the nature of dependent origination, I will explain the treasury of the wish-fulfilling jewel. This has two parts: a general explanation of the classification of precious jewels, and a detailed explanation of the specifics. The first is: The actual teachings of the sutras and tantras, such as precious jewels, and the treatises of the pandits and siddhas, the classifications of precious jewels such as five, seven, ten, fifteen, and nineteen, etc., divided into superior, middling, and inferior, all of these can be summarized into the three jewels of gods, humans, and bodhisattvas in terms of lineage. The teacher Nagarjuna said: Among the three types of precious jewels, the inferior human jewel has little power, but it also has a completely pure color, which can eliminate suffering such as poison, spirits, darkness, swelling, and fever, so it has seven qualities. The precious jewel of the gods, in addition to the previous seven qualities, also has eleven qualities such as always accompanying the body of the gods, being true, being able to speak, being light and not heavy. The precious jewel of the bodhisattva, in addition to the previous eleven qualities, can also observe the death and rebirth of all sentient beings, know the end of birth, and emit various sounds of the Dharma, so it has fourteen qualities. Thus it is said. Among them, the jewel of the bodhisattva is the adornment of the body, speech, and mind of those who have perfect enjoyment, and the joy of manifest, etc.

The adornments of the pure lands and immeasurable palaces, the foundations, trees, and so on, are as described in the arrangement of the pure land of Amitabha. The jewels of the gods are the sapphire (Sanskrit: indranīla) of Indra, large turquoise, and sārājati. The jewels of the asuras are jambuka, and the crown jewels of the dragon kings are bluish-green, eight-faceted beryl, etc., which can be grouped together according to similar categories, because the abodes of the asuras are of various kinds. Furthermore, the jewels of humans can be summarized into five types. The scholar Nāgārjuna said: gold, silver, red pearls, beryl, and cintāmaṇi, these five. Here, the others will be described below, but especially the cintāmaṇi, or wish-fulfilling jewel, has two types, superior and inferior. The first is the five types of relics of the Tathāgata, especially relics the size of mustard seeds. As it is said in the Bhadrakalpika Sutra: "The relics will increase." Just as in the teachings of the fourth teacher, the relics taken from the lotus-hearted stupa in India and placed in the white stupa of Samye Monastery also increase. It is said that such relics can only be obtained by humans, and other beings in the higher realms cannot obtain them. If one does not understand the meaning of this, then dividing the Buddha's body into eight parts would also be meaningless. However, the venerable Nāgārjuna said: "The wish-fulfilling jewel of humans comes from the relics of the Tathāgata. Until the sacred Dharma declines, it will protect the beings to be tamed in that land. When the sacred Dharma declines, the relics will transform into the shape of jewels and sink into the great ocean. For example, a thousand-year-old ice becomes a jewel." The meaning of this is that when the teachings decline, people will not be able to recognize the merits of the relics, so the relics will transform into jewels and remain in the great ocean, benefiting the nāgas. The second is the wish-fulfilling jewel that grants all desires when prayed to. This is a superior object transformed from relics, offered by the powerful nāgas to the Tathāgatas, gods, and sages, becoming the merit of the world, and its value is equal to the entire Jambudvipa.
