Manifesting with utmost clarity, distinguishing through the four modes of sutra—direct meaning, definitive meaning, hidden meaning, and figurative meaning—and possessing the virtues of rectification and protection, thereby extensively elucidating the Madhyamaka tenets, it explains the meaning of the three baskets (Tripitaka). That is, it provides the first explanation for the collection of speech (Vinaya), the second explanation for the collection of wisdom (Sutra), and the final explanation for the collection of praise (Abhidhamma). Similarly, Arya Deva authored the "Four Hundred Verses" and others, Matrceta authored the "Hymn to Avalokiteshvara's Conduct" and others, and Chandrakirti authored the "Clear Words" and the "Entering the Middle Way" and others. Around nine hundred years, nearing a thousand, the master Asanga and his brother appeared, and Asanga, through the practice of Maitreya, caused the Five Treatises of Maitreya to flourish in the world. In particular, he himself authored the "Five Treatises on the Grounds," the "Compendium of Determinations," the "Compendium of Explanations," and other twenty dharmas related to Maitreya, hence, the glorious protector Arya Nagarjuna and Asanga are known as the two great chariots, and are also the foremost of the six ornaments who adorn the world. The six ornaments are Nagarjuna, Asanga, Vasubandhu, Dignaga, Dharmakirti, and Gunaprabha. If counted as the eight supreme ones, the Omniscient One (Longchenpa) added Arya Deva, Candragomin, and Aryadeva to them, and subtracted Dignaga. So it is said, and elsewhere the classification of the two supreme ones is very famous. Thus, represented by the six ornaments and the two supreme ones who adorn the world, many great protectors of the teachings arose, cherishing the teachings of scripture and realization of Shakya Simha, and spreading them to the limits of the sky. Here it is said: Though the manner of gathering the retinue of the Teacher and protecting the teachings are shown as different, they are none other than the miraculous display of the wisdom of the definitive meaning Victor. The wise discuss the nature of speech. For the sake of disciples who are inclined towards dull faculties and causes, though the gateway to the conventional vehicle is immeasurable, since the result is not placed on the path, one is slightly wearied by the elaborations of the three countless eons. Whatever dissolves the four extremes of conceptual thought into space is utterly pure in its own nature. With the destruction of the clinging to self and the view of self, it is in the state of equality, free from extremes. The sutras and tantras, the scriptures

Having become afraid that it is the very essence of the ocean. In the manner of Buddhism, may those who speak of permanence and annihilation still rest in the ocean of samsara! This is the verse of that time. Secondly, regarding the duration of the teachings, there are common and uncommon aspects. According to the common aspect, the Sutra of the Fortunate Aeon and the Vinaya Minor Texts state that the actual teachings will last for five hundred years, and the mere image for five hundred years, totaling one thousand years. The Compassionate White Lotus Sutra states two thousand years. The Essence of the Moon Sutra also states two thousand years. The Hundred Thousand Commentary on Subjugation of Harm states five thousand years, and Kamalaśīla's commentary on the Diamond Cutter Sutra states five hundred years times five. Among these, the first (one thousand years) is based on the perspective of those who attain liberation being the majority. The second (two thousand years) is based on the perspective of those who enter the fruits and study the scriptures. The third (five thousand years) is based on the perspective of the majority having consistent views and practice. Here, in the Maitreya Prophecy Sutra, it is said: Śāriputra, after my complete passing into nirvana, for five thousand years, these five phenomena will gradually decline. What are the five? The first is that those who have attained the fruits will decline. And so on, explained according to such a system. Dividing the five thousand years into halves of thousands, there are ten five-hundreds. Among these, it is said that the ordination of women, such as the Mother of Beings, will hold only the mere signs in the last five hundred, which is called decline. That is, the time of the fruits is three five-hundreds, the time of the scriptures is three five-hundreds, the time of practice is three five-hundreds, and the time of holding only the signs is one five-hundred, totaling ten. In the time of the fruits, in the first of the three five-hundreds, there are many arhats and non-returners, and there are also once-returners. In the second five-hundred, there are many non-returners, and there are also once-returners. In the third five-hundred, there are many stream-enterers, and there are also a few others. Here, others place practice before and scriptures after, but the Omniscient One does not consider it pure. In the three times of the scriptures, the first time is Abhidharma, the second time is Sutra, and the third time is Vinaya, which flourish and have many holders. In the three times of practice, the first time mainly practices ethics, the second time mainly practices samadhi, and the third time mainly practices wisdom. Thus, in the ten five-hundreds, which time is it now? Some...
