Commentary on Chapter Three. Commentary on Chapter Three. The third general topic is the arrangement of cause and effect: Thus, those who have reached the next world, by what kind of status are they bound? Only virtuous deeds and habitual sins bring them near. Conventional truth is infallible. Whoever reaches the state of the afterlife is not annihilated like holding wrong views, nor does one go to higher or lower states by chance. Rather, the high and low states of the afterlife follow the infallible law of cause and effect. As the White Lotus of Compassion says: "The world is made by karma, transformed by karma. Sentient beings are made by karma, born from the cause of karma, and differentiated by karma." And as the Precious Garland says: "From virtue comes happiness, likewise all happy migrations. From non-virtue comes suffering, likewise all bad migrations." Therefore, to illustrate this with examples and meanings: Whatever kinds of seeds are gathered, as farmers clearly see, in other lifetimes, familiar and habitual actions make this world diverse. For example, crops follow the seeds themselves. If bitter and spicy seeds such as bitter gourd and long pepper are sown, the fruits will also be bitter and spicy. If grapes or mangoes are sown, only sweet tastes will result. Similarly, from non-virtuous actions come the fruits of suffering and bad migrations, and from virtuous actions come the fruits of happiness and higher realms. The Noble Determination Sutra says: "Spicy seeds will produce spicy fruits. Sweet seeds will produce sweet fruits. By this example, the wise should know that the ripening of sins is spicy, and the fruit of white deeds is sweet. One should not commit the three sins, and even if others do, the wise should not rejoice in them. With body, speech, and mind, always do the three white deeds. Those who practice virtue, should also rejoice in others." This shows both the characteristic of the fruit arising from the cause and what should be adopted and abandoned. Although this is so, sentient beings, from beginningless time, are under the influence of karma and afflictions.

Uses dependent origination. Because it follows after it, the way in which different situations, lineages, and happiness and suffering are formed is as follows: "Because sentient beings have different desires, this makes the world diverse." In particular, although the differences in the behavior and thoughts of human beings are difficult to measure, the way in which the results ripen without error is as follows. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "People are like unripe mangoes, like ripe but not ripe, unripe appearing unripe, ripe appearing ripe, know it to be like that." The first aspect is like a mango fruit that is not ripe inside but ripe outside, which is a person whose mind is deteriorated but whose actions are perfect. The one who is ripe but looks unripe, whose inside is ripe but whose outside is not separated from the nature of green, is a person whose actions are deteriorated but whose mind is perfect. The one who appears to be unripe and is unripe is one whose mind and actions are both deteriorated. The one who appears to be ripe and is ripe is one whose mind and actions are both perfect. Just as the cause is, so is the nature of the result. As it says in the sutra, "From light to the end of light," etc., the meaning is in the Letter to a Friend: "From light to the end of light, from darkness to the end of darkness, from light to the end of darkness, from darkness to the end of light, there are four kinds of people, be the first of them." Going from light to the end of light refers to being born among gods and great powerful people and being born again in the same place. The one called from darkness to the end of darkness is born among the small powerful people of the lower realms and is born again in either of those two. The one called from light to the end of darkness is born among the gods and great powerful people, and after that, is born among the three lower realms and the small powerful people. The one called from darkness to the end of light is born from the three lower realms, etc., into the world of the gods and the great powerful people. For the latter two, for example, the miserly and the son of the gods as a frog. As it says in the commentary. Therefore, the results of the previous life's virtues and sins can be known by the present happiness and suffering. Although the results of the present actions are not immediately visible, like the earth rising to a high place.
