Chapter Seven: The Story of How to Compose the Wheel of Action with Special Elaboration Chapter Seven: The Story of How to Compose the Wheel of Action with Special Elaboration The seventh general topic is the story of how, for the sake of the Dharma's duration, the great Vajra places of the tantras are planted as the life force of letters, which is divided into two parts: the establishment of how it arises, depending on the qualities of knowledge; and how the wheel of action is assembled from the causes that become the master. The first is: As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras, "If one does not strive in the five fields of knowledge, how can one attain the sacred state of all Buddhas?" Like this, for Bodhisattvas who are particularly engaged in striving for the state of omniscience, the sacred places that should be studied are the five or ten famous great fields of knowledge, namely: Inner Science, Logic, Grammar, Medicine, and Craftsmanship. Its definition is in the commentary on the Ornament: "Among them, one who is skilled in the twelve branches of the Buddha's teachings is called Inner Science. One who is skilled in the treatises of reasoning, which are encompassed by direct perception and inference, is called Logic. One who is skilled in the grammar of sound is called Grammar. One who is skilled in the treatises of healing diseases such as wind and phlegm is called Medicine. One who is skilled in the treatises of song, dance, incense, etc., is called Craftsmanship." It is said that this includes the five minor fields of knowledge, as well as the eighteen fields of knowledge mentioned in the sutras. Among them, Inner Science enables one to know without error the characteristic of reality itself as the noble path. Logic and Grammar enable one to defeat those non-Buddhists who boast of being skilled in these two fields of knowledge. Medicine enables beings afflicted by disease to breathe in a place of comfort.
