《A Condensed Essence: Commentary on the Six-Branched Yoga》 ༈ In Sanskrit: Yoga Shat Anga Briti Hridya Laghu Nama. (A Condensed Essence: Commentary on the Six-Branched Yoga). Homage to glorious Vajrasattva! Having paid homage to Vajrasattva, I will explain the six-branched yoga. Thus, having vowed to explain the offerings and praises, there are two parts to practicing the vowed instructions. The first part, on how to practice, is also divided into three parts. First, the concise statement: Severing the conceptualizations of the five senses grasping their respective five objects; when seeing empty forms such as smoke, not allowing the mind to waver elsewhere but remaining steadfast; forcefully stopping the flow of the right and left life-winds, causing them to enter the central channel bindu; that wind, having entered the central channel, traveling through the four chakras, holding onto the 'హం (Tibetan: ཧཾ, Devanagari: हं, Romanized Sanskrit: haṃ, Literal meaning: haṃ)' bindu at the crown of the head; by the power of the wind seizing the 'హం (Tibetan: ཧཾ, Devanagari: हं, Romanized Sanskrit: haṃ, Literal meaning: haṃ)' bindu, remembering the melting bodhicitta, entering the fire, blazing at the navel of the inner heat; from steadfastly holding onto the empty form of the great seal, the immutable bliss-emptiness samadhi arises. Thus, the mind of sentient beings, the basis, through the path of genuine non-conceptual samadhi, attains the fruit of the non-conceptual wisdom body, becoming a Buddha who benefits beings, these six branches are taught in all the king of tantras, such as the glorious Kalachakra. The second part, the detailed explanation, is divided into six parts. First, individual severance, divided into two parts. The meaning of individual severance is: the five senses, such as the eye, do not take the five objects, such as form. Regarding the method, there are three parts. First, meditating on the yoga of day and night, divided into two parts. Meditating on the night yoga: In a secluded place with the proper conditions, sit on a comfortable cushion, and meditate with the three immovabilities. Among these, the body remains still: the legs are in the lotus position, the spine is straight, the hands are placed on the knees or in the samadhi mudra, the neck is slightly bent. The body remains unmoving, the eyes neither open nor closed, but gazing straight ahead, the pupils unmoving, looking from the nostrils at the sky twelve or sixteen finger-widths away. As it is said: 'The two eyes neither open nor close.' Speech remains still: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do not intentionally hold your breath in, nor intentionally exhale (do not judge the coming and going of breath), but leave it in its natural state. By maintaining it in this way, there will be no wind disease caused by excessive inhalation, nor cold disease caused by excessive exhalation. To maintain the mind without wavering is to leave the mind in its uncorrected, natural state, being aware in the present moment, single-pointedly not thinking of anything, relaxing the mind and not being distracted, entering into samadhi. Among these four ways, to leave awareness in the present moment without grasping is: to keep the body still and the eyes wide open; to keep speech still and the original state (because artificial actions are meaningless); the mind does not follow after the past (because the past is over), does not welcome the future (because the future has not yet arrived), and does not calculate the present. Let awareness be in the present moment, in the uncorrected, natural state, without grasping and without distraction, entering into samadhi. As it is said in the scriptures: 'Initially, be free from beginning and end, in the middle, rely on it slightly, abide in it and abandon it, from this, ten signs will arise.' This is the pith instruction for keeping the three times—past, present, and future—in a state of non-grasping (for example), like three brothers (not associating with the eldest brother, but associating with the middle brother). To keep awareness focused on one point is: to keep the body and speech still, as before, and to focus the mind, eyes, and breath on the sky directly in front of the space between the eyebrows, without distraction, entering into samadhi. As it is said: 'Mind, eyes, and breath in the space, the skilled yogi should do simultaneously, the qualities of the Victorious One will surely arise, this is the word of the All-Knowing One.' This is to lead consciousness (from the eye sense of the five senses) to (the door of space), focusing on one point (for example, like a monkey tied to one room in a house with five rooms, not going to other rooms). To maintain without thinking of anything is: to keep the body and speech still, as before, and to let the mind be in its uncorrected, natural state, not thinking of anything, not making any mental activity, without distraction, entering into samadhi. As it is said: 'Relying on non-things (conventional truth, self-emptiness), make (all internal and external) things non-things (knowing them as self-empty), make the mind (with conceptual thoughts) non-mind (without conceptualization), (like observing smoke, etc.) do not think of anything.' This is to maintain without thinking of anything (for example), like the clay statue in a temple (with a smiling face and wide-open eyes, but not thinking of anything). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
