Therefore, it is considered to be named based on the mantra in the Heart Sutra that "completely pacifies all suffering" (སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཐམས་ཅད་རབ་ཏུ་ཞི་བར་བྱེད་པའི་སྔགས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: sarva-duḥkha praśamana, Sanskrit Romanization: sarva-duhkha prashamana, literal meaning: pacifier of all suffering). The so-called "Chöd" (cutting) means that what is to be cut off includes: obstructions, non-obstructions, attachment, and pride, which are all the afflictions that become the cause and effect of the four maras. It is not done by alternating abandonment and counteraction, but by cutting them off on their own ground, hence the name. Its essence is Prajñāpāramitā, distinguished by conduct that is in accordance with mantras. Furthermore, regarding the initial teaching of the holy Dharma Vinaya, the lineage of the Lower Vinaya of the Early Translation School is as follows: During the time of the god-king Trisong Detsen (ཁྲི་སྲོང་ལྡེ་བཙན།, 742-797 AD), the great Bodhisattva Śāntarakṣita marked the ordination of the seven awakened ones, such as Ba Ratna Yeshe Wangpo (སྦ་རཏྣ་ཡེ་ཤེས་དབང་པོ།) and Srungwa (སྲུང་བ་), as the lighting of the first lamp of the Dharma. When Darma (དར་མ་) destroyed the Dharma, Ba Ratna's disciple, the Vinaya holder Mar Yo Tsang (དམར་གཡོ་གཙང་)

The Karma Kagyu lineage, the Drukpa Kagyu lineage from Chos Lungpa, the Ngor lineage from Tshal Migpa, and the earlier Sakya lineages have seen a great increase in the tradition of monastic discipline. Therefore, in all directions, the teachings of discipline have become extremely widespread and flourishing. Thus, in the depths of the snowy mountains, relying solely on the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, the gathering of the Sangha, and the manner in which the successions of abbots have come about, etc., some well-known names have already been mentioned. In general, as it is said: 'Supreme is wisdom, its basis is listening, therefore listening is precious.' Therefore, it is extremely important to listen extensively to the practitioners and teachings of one's own and others' schools of thought. Otherwise, some people pride themselves on only being proficient in their own traditions, thinking that others, apart from their own lineage of gurus and teachings, lack wisdom and accomplishment, and lack scriptural authority and reasoning. Thinking this way and advising others, they accumulate the unbearable negative karma of abandoning the Dharma. Therefore, those who wish for their own well-being should carefully read the biographies of the compassionate Buddha, such as the Garland of Jewels Sutra, and the One Hundred and Twenty-Five Praises, which summarize the meaning of these sutras, written by Jampa Chosje Kelsang Gyatso, and the Supplement to the Thirty-Two Jataka Tales, written by Rangjung Shyepa, etc., as well as the Great Commentary of Yeshe Gyaltsen, etc., and the Parable: Wish-Fulfilling Vine, with annotations by Panglo Ton, etc., as well as works that summarize the meaning, and the Sixteen Arhats, such as the Elder Yeshe Gyaltsen, etc., and the Biographies of the Eighty-Four Mahasiddhas, etc., read them well and generate faith. Regarding the general history of the teachings of all schools, the History of Buddhism in India and the Tales of the Seven Transmissions, etc., written by the Omniscient Taranatha, and many works by Indian masters, as well as the History of Buddhism in China written by Gung Gonpo Kyab, the History of Buddhism by Buton Rinchen, the Red Annals by Tselpa, the Blue Annals by Gorampa, the History of the Dharma: Feast for the Wise by Pawo Tsuklak Trengwa, The White Lotus: The Rising Sun that Expands the Lotus of the Teachings by Paten Khakyab Dorje, the Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems by Thu'u bkwan pa, the Mirror Illuminating the Royal Genealogies, and the Feast of the Youthful Complete Enjoyment, etc. In particular, those mentioned earlier

Cultivate the eye of wisdom to examine the biographies and histories of all, and upon upholding one's own tradition without losing it, abandon reviling other schools with hatred, etc. May the lotus of faith blossom supremely. Hearing dispels the suffering of the mind, and causes the treasure of benefit and happiness to increase. May the biographies of the holy ones, like the moon crystal, illuminate the three realms. This is a chapter of notes briefly explaining the lineages, etc., that have appeared in the land of the snowy mountains (Tibet). Shubham astu sarva jagatām. (May all beings be auspicious!)
