Sa. How to take refuge: From now until enlightenment, whatever happiness, suffering, good or bad may occur, thinking that only you know, entrusting oneself wholeheartedly with complete reliance. The precepts after taking refuge in this way are: to take refuge by constantly remembering the Three Jewels, never abandoning the Three Jewels no matter what happens, and not seeking refuge or reliance from other sources, etc., should be widely known. Sixth: Just as in the sky, even the edge of the eastern sky alone cannot be measured, the sky in all directions is also limitless. All of these are pervaded by the realm of sentient beings. Each of these sentient beings has been one's parents countless times since beginningless time, and each time they have protected one from all harm, cared for one with loving-kindness, nurtured one with compassionate actions, and accomplished whatever benefit they could, being one's sole benefactor. Leaving all these beings in the midst of samsaric suffering, what is the point of attaining liberation alone? Therefore, since all these beings appear to desire happiness and not desire suffering, I shall bring them happiness and free them from suffering. With this extraordinary mind of loving-kindness and compassion as a guide, for their sake, I shall attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment. And this does not arise from no cause and no condition, therefore, taking as the basis the pure discipline that is the lord of causes and conditions, training one's mind with the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating, and especially relying on renunciation, the mind of enlightenment, the correct view, and the profound means of Vajra Yoga, in this very life, I shall realize the state of union, and I shall spend my time with such thoughts and actions. These are the chapters on the Great Perfection Heart Essence. 'Impermanence, suffering, cultivate the mind of enlightenment.' And in the Oral Transmission of Treasures, with the three appearances of the preliminary practices as the basis, the mind training of the three types of individuals in the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, and the Great Seal, etc., including the four turnings of the mind and the refuge mind, all the paths common to the two lower vehicles have been completely taught. Second, the uncommon practice of Vajrayana, in the Vajra Peak Sutra it says:

It is the path of maturation and liberation, the Dharma of relying on the Buddha's enlightenment. Here, focusing on the unsurpassed and uncommon empowerment, the four empowerments of cause and time purify the continuum without error, and at the beginning of entering the path, there are two: preliminary and main practices. The first includes the Vajrasattva meditation and recitation to purify sins and obscurations, the Mandala ritual to accumulate merit, and the Guru Yoga to swiftly receive blessings, totaling three. Firstly, the obstacle to the arising of realization in the main practice is sin and obscuration. Although there are countless methods for purification, the ultimate one is the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva. Among the four powers, contemplating the uncommon refuge as the support for others' continuums, and contemplating the mind of enlightenment as the support for one's own continuum, are the powers of reliance. All sentient beings, in ultimate truth, inherently possess the pure essence of Buddhahood, but due to temporarily not realizing this, generating intense remorse for past sins and transgressions is the power of regret. From now on, even at the cost of one's life, resolving not to commit sinful deeds is the power of abstaining from wrongdoing. As an antidote to past deeds, practicing the yoga of the Guru Vajrasattva, reciting profound secret mantras, and cleansing with the nectar descending, washing, and burning with the fire of wisdom, etc., cultivating the practice of specific visualizations is the power of relying on the antidote. Strive in this way until signs of purification of sins arise, and constantly remain inseparable from this yoga. Secondly, the favorable condition for the arising of realization is the accumulation of merit. Although there are countless entrances, here is gathered the special method of accumulating merit through the union of Sutra and Tantra—the Mandala. Wipe the Mandala plate with precious substances, apply water with pleasant fragrance, arrange clusters of moist flowers, and visualize its essence as arising from oneself, enjoyment, the ocean of virtuous accumulations, etc. Its nature is a beautiful arrangement with the four continents, Mount Meru, etc., its qualities are inconceivable, its place pervades the limits of space, and its time continues until samsara is not empty.
