Clarifying the Meaning of the Tathagatagarbha. Clarifying the Meaning of the Tathagatagarbha. Herein lies the treatise clarifying the meaning of the Tathagatagarbha. Homage to the King of Munis! This treatise explains how the nature of the Tathagatagarbha is spoken of in the sutras, and how it is explained in the commentaries, and establishes the meaning of its essence, elucidates the intention of other statements, and dispels doubts. First, the Hearers' Vehicle considers the mind's naturally pure nature as the four intentions, and although it does not use the term Tathagatagarbha to indicate it, it actually speaks of this meaning. In the Mahayana sutras, there are two ways of describing it: according to the need for realization, it is described by other names, and it is directly explained by its own name. The first, in some Mind-Only sutras and tantras, it is explained as existing in the continuum of beings in the manner of possessing excellent marks and signs, and is explained in a way similar to conditioned phenomena. In short, the general counter-image of the Tathagatagarbha is called by names of specific dharma-natures such as the naturally abiding lineage, and cannot be completely equated with it. Why? Because the Tathagatagarbha is the basis, path, and result, and is the nature of all differences of dharma. It is not the dharma-nature of a particular aspect of dharma. The second, the three doors of liberation in the sutras, and the naturally co-emergent in the tantras, the non-duality of samsara and nirvana, the emptiness endowed with all excellent qualities, the union of Nagarjuna, the extremely pure Suchness of Virupa, and the wisdom of non-duality of profundity and clarity spoken of by the teacher Buddhajnana, the inconceivable wisdom spoken of in the Chakrasamvara, and the extremely non-elaborate spoken of in the instructions of Rakta Yamari, etc. Although these do not exist from the nature itself as the names indicate, it is clear that they can be acknowledged as such in conventional terms. Second, the Lesser Vehicle does not accept that sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, so how is this meaning explained? The Mind-Only school of the Great Vehicle, both Madhyamaka and Mind-Only, believes that the mind is naturally luminous, its essence is encompassed by self-awareness, and its substantial existence is the Tathagatagarbha.

Explaining the essence of the Sugata, it is considered that those named with the names of fruits such as Buddhas are not literal but have a guiding meaning. As Dharmakirti said, "Whatever is the consciousness of ordinary beings, its nature is completely pure. To that, one speaks of Buddha, like a Bodhisattva on the ground is like a Buddha." Therefore. The Madhyamaka school believes that all sutras and treatises that explain the ultimate meaning only explain the nature of the Tathagatagarbha in the manner of union. So, if it is thought that in the Madhyamaka school, there are many explanations of the dharmadhatu of sentient beings and Buddhas being inseparable, as well as the emptiness part of the mind, and just clarity and awareness, and the explanation of the alaya consciousness, and the explanation of the dharmakaya, etc., then the first statement does not go beyond union. There is no explanation of mere emptiness and mere clarity and awareness in the Madhyamaka treatises. The explanation of the alaya consciousness covers the previous explanation that is not literal. Even if it is said that the essence is the dharmakaya, it does not establish that the essence is the dharmakaya. The reason for mentioning the four explanations from the perspective of clarity, emptiness, and dharmakaya of one's own system is that it focuses on the way of speaking with those names as the main content. In the third aspect, according to the view of the venerable brothers, there is a general instruction and a separate instruction in conjunction with the three vows. In the first aspect, the nature of the essence is determined, and it is shown that it pervades everything. The first point is that the root tantra says, "Called great wisdom," wisdom is clarity, great is emptiness, and the two are united because they have the same basis. And its characteristics are explained as abandoning both the imputation and the depreciation conceptualizations. In general, the word essence is similar to sara and gandha, or it can be understood as birthplace, etc., so it can be understood as unchanging, and becoming the source of all samsara and nirvana, etc. In short, the nature of the mind is free from elaboration, and it is the nature of skillful means and wisdom, which is called the Tathagatagarbha, because the Tathagatas are the place of birth. Showing the Tathagatagarbha in the birthplace of the Tathagatas, and the Tathagatas and nature are inseparable, which is the Sugatagarbha, and showing the essence in the cause, these three are in the Uttaratantra.
