Fourth, one should do this. One should completely abandon wine, the root of all evils. Except for the purpose of taming sentient beings, all actions that should not be done should be abandoned. One should attend to the holy ones and serve the yogis. The actions of the body are threefold, the actions of speech are fourfold, and the actions of the mind are threefold; one should protect them as much as possible. You should not despise the secret ones of gods and non-gods. One should not step on mudras, mounts, weapons, and hand seals. These are said to be vows, and you should always protect them. The extensive concordant vows are extensively explained in the secret tantras. Thus, there are eleven in total, and if one violates these, they are root downfalls and concordant downfalls. In the six thousand yoga tantras, without distinguishing between the root and branch vows and downfalls of what is to be prohibited and established, those that are spoken according to circumstances should be combined with this in accordance and protected through understanding. What are they? As the 'Summit Tantra' says: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, these are the main ones, and should be taken seriously. And as the 'Collected Permanence' says: Even for the sake of life, one should not abandon bodhicitta. And as the 'Glorious Supreme' says: Bodhicitta is not to be abandoned. And so on, it is extensively taught. Thirdly, in Vajrasattva, the 'Root Tantra' says: Body, speech, and mind secrets, the wise should protect the vows. And as the 'Collected Essence of the Lotus' says: Those who indulge in desire, purify it with desire itself. And as the Tathagata said: Previously, for the benefit of sentient beings, he also manifested as the Great Wrathful One. This is the vow of the great family of the Vajra lineage, which is difficult to transgress. And it says: For the lotus and the jewel, after knowing their nature as pure, do those things that need to be done. This is the vow of the lotus lineage, which is difficult to transgress. Thus, it is taught that each lineage should practice the vows. If one violates them, the methods of rectification are: to make amends through recitation, peaceful fire offerings, and empowerments, etc. Furthermore, one should combine them appropriately according to what is said in the 'Ornament of the Essence'. Thirdly, the methods for attaining the fruit are: the common ones, as well as the excellent faculties for accomplishing past siddhis, and those who are frightened by meditation and action.
