32. The Rebirth Story of Kunkhyen Chökyi Gyalpo 32. The Rebirth Story of Kunkhyen Chökyi Gyalpo Then, acting for the benefit of all sentient beings through his own form, Avalokiteśvara was born from the palm of the Victorious One. Kunkhyen Chökyi Gyalpo, non-dual, possessing the wisdom of the three baskets, the glorious banner of wisdom, may Samantabhadra bless us. Furthermore, showing various means for the benefit of sentient beings, he emanated countless forms. As stated in the Noble Golden Light Sutra: "The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is inconceivable. The Tathagata is the eternal body. For the benefit of sentient beings, he shows various manifestations." In the Noble Sutra of Holding the Lotus, it is said: "Some are tamed by the form of the Tathagata. Some sentient beings are tamed by seeing the body of a god. Some are tamed by the form of a male or female body. Some are tamed by the manner of being large or small." Thus, it is extensively taught. In particular, regarding how this glorious lama tames sentient beings, as stated in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra: "Then, the Bhagavan went to the sandalwood mountain of Good Wings in the south. The sons of the gods, dwelling in the sky as high as seven tala trees, scattered flowers upon the Tathagata and spoke these words: 'Alas! After the Bhagavan has passed into complete nirvana, what kind of bhikshu will appear who will hold this sutra?' The Bhagavan replied: 'Sons of the gods, after I have passed into complete nirvana, those who have performed virtuous roots and have revered many Buddhas will hold this sutra and will extensively explain it to others. This Great Cloud Sutra will also circulate in Jambudvipa for forty years and will also be widely propagated.' Thereafter, in the degenerate age, when the holy Dharma is abandoned, when kings are in conflict, and when the holy Dharma is declining, bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, and upasikas with impure bodies, whose discipline is ruined, whose wisdom is perverse, and who are as dull as sheep, will see those who hold this sutra and will not have faith. They will laugh and think that it is not spoken by the Buddha but composed by poets.

They say I am a craftsman. Because it is far from the precious Dharma, it is difficult to subdue the beginning of famine, and fierce demons will also appear. There will be those who possess male and female slaves, completely possess land and gold, possess conch shells and agate, possess staffs and coral, possess cattle and buffalo, possess the objects of the fields, possess swans, wild ducks, pigs, and all other possessions, and there will also be instances of using poison. Many non-virtuous deeds will be done, and in such a time when ignorance is fully increased, and the holy Dharma is declining, a bhikshu similar to Kashyapa (འོད་སྲུང) will be born in Jambudvipa. Having renounced among my Shravaka disciples, gradually, among those difficult to subdue the beginning of famine and fierce demons, he will praise the sutras spoken by the Tathagata, guard the Pratimoksha vows, and in the end, even at the cost of his own life, he will praise the established precepts. After that, he will praise the foot of the tree. Similarly, he will praise prostrations and offerings, and dwelling in monasteries, he will praise discipline, and will punish those who are not subdued. Sons of the gods, at that time, you must always protect that Shravaka bhikshu of mine. The sons of the gods pleaded: Bhagavan, we too will attend to and serve that bhikshu, and we will always protect him. The Bhagavan said: Sons of the gods, well done, well done. You have vowed and prayed for the occasion, and the gods will also protect that noble bhikshu. Then, many sons of the gods asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, how long will it be before the son of the Tathagata, a bhikshu similar to Kashyapa (འོད་སྲུང), will appear? Where will he be born? What will his name be? Sons of the gods, after I have passed away, after many hundreds of years have passed, he will appear in the southern direction, from among a large assembly of retinues. When he is eighty years old, and the holy Dharma is about to disappear, with only a small remnant remaining, my Shravaka disciple will appear, and the holy Dharma will also flourish. The Dharma of

The wheel will be turned. The Great Vehicle will also be extensively taught to others. Upon hearing the exposition of such a sutra, there will be faith. Then, the son of the gods, Delightful to See. The king of the Gandharvas, having circumambulated the Blessed One, prostrated with his head at the feet, and addressed the Blessed One thus: "Blessed One, like the great light protector, the great monk with the same name as the Tathagata, abiding in great compassion, constantly abiding in great discipline, exceedingly supreme and beautiful, born into a great lineage, surrounded by monks with great discipline, along with the time, along with the place, and also the town and whatever form, please, Blessed One, extensively explain. Blessed One, I will protect that monk for as long as I live." Then the Blessed One spoke, "King of the Gandharvas, listen to the prophecy of that monk. He is secluded for me, and he causes my teachings to arise and bears the burden, this very youth of mine, a Licchavi. King of the Gandharvas, after my passing, in the southern direction, there will arise a region called Drangsong Dolpo, a city of Kayaori endowed with merit, called Great Sand. That city has a river called Beautiful Union. He will arise on the northern bank of that river. He will arise in a place called Drakochen, where there is a completely pure great lineage. The great lineage of the Shakyas, the youth Licchavi, delightful to see by all the world, he will be named with my name. The great royal lineage of Drakochen should also be regarded as the lineage of the Tathagata. At that time, the region called Drangsong Dolpo will also be prosperous and flourishing, and filled with many people. That city of the monk with the same name as the Tathagata will also become beloved in the hearts of all beings, and will be revered by all beings. When that boy goes forth and leads the retinue practicing similarly to Brahma, and the assembly of monks, even at the cost of his own life, he will teach the sacred Dharma. Thus
