29, Twenty-eighth: The Jataka of the Holy One, Born as Nagarjuna. 29, Twenty-eighth: The Jataka of the Holy One, Born as Nagarjuna. Furthermore, in the past, this glorious lama was born as Nagarjuna Essence, and he worked for the benefit of sentient beings. In the Sutra of the Prophecy of Magol, it is said: When the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was teaching the Dharma to the fourfold assembly in the city of Lanka, a crow flew in the sky and dropped a piece of bird droppings, which landed on the Tathagata's robes. At that time, the Tathagata smiled and burst into laughter. Then, from within the assembled gathering, Ananda asked: The Tathagata does not smile without cause or condition. Bhagavan, what is the cause of your smile? What is the condition? Thus he inquired. The Bhagavan replied: Ananda, listen! I will explain the details of the cause and condition of my smile. The demon king, Garab Wangchuk (Skt: Kāmarūpa-vaśavartin) with a black heart, in the past also set up many contests against me and tried to create obstacles. Now, he is jealous of my teaching the Dharma, so he threw bird droppings. After my passing into nirvana, he will destroy my teachings once. This crow now will be born as the heretic Magol and will cause the Buddha's teachings to decline once. The Bhagavan said this. Then, from within that assembly, the bodhisattva of noble lineage, the young Licchavi, known as "Joyful to See by All the World, Greatly Famous and Without Stain," and the young bodhisattva holding two lotuses in his hands, rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and prayed: Alas, Tathagata Bhagavan! Your words of truth are exceedingly blessed! All sentient beings who hear them will be drawn to the Dharma that exhausts all the sins accumulated over countless eons. I would rather give up my life than abandon the Buddha's teachings. In the future, when the teachings are declining, when the opponents called Magol arise, please grant me the prophecy to subdue them. Then, the Bhagavan said: Well done! Well done! Son of good lineage, well done! In the future, I will pass into nirvana in the city of Tsa-chok.

After four hundred years, this crow will become a person with the thoughts of the black Ishvara. His name will be Magol. He will also be known as a Tirthika teacher, and also as the master of the Vedas. He will also seize the root of blackness, destroying and expelling my monasteries and the Vidyadhara monks. At that time, those who are on my side will become weak, and in a time of suffering, you, monk, will appear. His name will be Naga, and he will be very famous, with flourishing lineage, appearance, and wealth, never satisfied with hearing, cutting off the schools of existence and non-existence and the armies of evil views, and placing them on the right path. For example, as soon as the lord of the seven horses appears, the classes of black mountains, darkness, gloom, and great gloom will disappear from Jambudvipa, becoming exceedingly clear and beautiful. Similarly, when a monk named Naga appears, the views of existence, non-existence, and the roots of the Tirthikas in Jambudvipa will be like sunlight falling on a marmot. He will make my teachings extremely prosperous. And so on, it was said. In the Sutra of the Great Cloud, it is said: Shariputra, this Licchavi youth named 'Seeing him, all beings rejoice,' four hundred years after my complete Nirvana, will become a monk named Naga, and will make my teachings extremely prosperous. Eventually, in the world called 'Utmost Joyful Light,' he will attain Buddhahood as the Tathagata Jnana-utpatti. Thus it was said. In the Lankavatara Sutra, it is said: After the Sugata's Nirvana, the one who will uphold the teachings, after the passage of time, will appear, named Great Minister You. In the country of Vidarbha in the south, there will be a monk, glorious and greatly renowned, his name will be called Naga, and in the world, in my teachings, he will destroy the schools of existence and non-existence, mainly teaching the Unsurpassed Vehicle, attaining the Utmost Joyful Ground, he will go to Sukhavati. Thus it was said. In the Manjushri Root Tantra, it is said: Here, after my Nirvana, when four hundred years have passed, a monk named Naga will appear, benefiting the teachings.
