He is called "The Great Accomplished One." Ananda, these two, having passed away from this Buddha-field, were born in that Buddha-field. Thus he spoke. Then, Amitabha Buddha declared, "Son of noble family, subdue all sentient beings of the snowy land through various means, and in the end, lead them to my presence!" Thus he spoke. Immediately, Avalokiteshvara appeared in the middle of an unopened lotus flower by the Lotus Lake, the stem of the flower being the size of a dar tree, and the petals the size of a vulture's wings. He is always in a rainbow-colored tent, and many gods and servants pay homage and circumambulate him. Then, King Indrabodhi thought, "Surely, an emanation body resides there." So, the king, with his retinue, went to the shore of the lake and constantly prayed. When the lotus flower opened, a boy appeared, as white as a polished conch shell, holding a rosary and a white lotus, his hair reaching his shoulders, wearing a white silk lower garment. He was extremely handsome, adorned with marks and signs. He proclaimed the sound of compassion to all sentient beings, and tears flowed from his eyes. In the midst of his two tears, the noble Tara and the wrathful goddess Krodheshvari appeared. These two said, "Son of noble family, do not be discouraged. When you act for the benefit of sentient beings, we two will always be your helpers." Then, Avalokiteshvara went to the summit of Mount Potala, opened his eyes like fully bloomed lotus petals, and gazed completely in all ten directions. In general, he saw all sentient beings of the three realms, especially all sentient beings of the three lower realms. Having seen them, he made this vow: "I have promised Amitabha Buddha that I will lead all sentient beings to Sukhavati. Therefore, I will lead all these suffering sentient beings, without leaving a single one behind, to the state of liberation. If I am unable to lead them, may my head be split into ten pieces, may my right and left hands be shattered into a thousand pieces, and may my two eyes become like that!" Having made this aspiration, he went to the Avici hell, which became like the pure land of Amitabha. In the Great Commentary, Immaculate Light, it says: "Here, for the benefit of all sentient beings, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas enter samsara, which is not to be spoken of by those in samsara."

When the Lord of the World entered hell for the sake of sentient beings, the Kings of Death spoke: He who is liberated from the bonds of existence, yet holds onto existence for the sake of sentient beings. He is the one who reveals the meaning of emptiness, and when the time is right, does not abandon the fruits of karma. Having burned away the stains of the mind with the fire of perfect wisdom, he is always full of perfect love. His actions are impermanent, a Buddha who delights in benefiting sentient beings, we prostrate to you. After praising in this way, thinking that all sentient beings had been saved, he went again to Potala. He saw that there were more than before, and they were suffering as before. Then he went again, led them all out, and saw at Potala that it was still the same as before. In this way, he did this many times, but they only increased in number. Then he cried out like this: Alas, alas, Victorious Amitabha (Tibetan: འོད་དཔག་མེད།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमिताभ, Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal Chinese meaning: Immeasurable Light)! The endless ocean of samsara, how terrifying! I have no means to lead them. My eyes, head, and hands will now break apart. As soon as he said this, his head split into ten pieces. Each of his two hands split into five hundred pieces, and his eyes also split into a thousand pieces. In Sukhavati, Amitabha (Tibetan: འོད་དཔག་མེད།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमिताभ, Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal Chinese meaning: Immeasurable Light) arose in his mind and came to Potala, saying: Noble son, do not do this. I will also be your friend, and until samsara is empty, do the work of benefiting beings. Having said this, he gathered the pieces of his head and blessed them into eleven faces. Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal Chinese meaning: Immeasurable Light) himself also resides as an ornament on the crown of his head. He gathered the pieces of his hands and blessed them into a thousand universal monarchs. He placed the eyes in the palms of his hands and enthroned a thousand Buddhas. He conferred the empowerment to continuously benefit beings. The Buddhas were unable to count the merit of Avalokiteśvara (Tibetan: སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अवलोकितेश्वर, Sanskrit Romanization: Avalokiteśvara, Literal Chinese meaning: Observing the World's Sounds). In the Karandavyuha Sutra, the Blessed One said: Lotus Hand (Tibetan: ལག་ན་པད་མོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: हस्तेपद्म, Sanskrit Romanization: Hastepadma, Literal Chinese meaning: Hand Lotus). For example, even if rain falls day and night on the four great continents for twelve months of the year, it is possible to count each drop. Noble son, I am unable to count the accumulation of merit of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokiteśvara (Tibetan: སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अवलोकितेश्वर, Sanskrit Romanization: Avalokiteśvara, Literal Chinese meaning: Observing the World's Sounds). Countless sutras speak of this. Think of the benefits of hearing his name.
