The Root Teachings of the Six Great Volumes Ztsa17 *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes* *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes* Chapter 1: Definition *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes* Sanskrit: Madhyānta-vibhāga-kārikā. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Definition, obscuration is itself, the antidote is meditation, and the basis of meditation and the fruit attained, is the unsurpassed vehicle. The unreal imagination exists; in it, both existence and non-existence are present. Emptiness exists in it; in it, that also exists. It is neither empty nor non-empty; therefore, everything is explained. By existence and non-existence, this is the Middle Way. Meaning, sentient beings, and the self-image, the appearance of consciousness arises, but it has no meaning. Because it does not exist, that also does not exist. The unreal imagination, therefore, this is established. Likewise, it is neither existent nor non-existent. When it is exhausted, it is said to be liberation. The imagined, the dependent, and the perfectly established, for the sake of meaning, it is said to be unreal imagination, it is said because the two do not exist. Relying on the object, non-object arises. Relying on non-object, non-object arises. Therefore, the object is established as the nature of non-object. Thus, the object and non-object should be known as equal. The unreal imagination is, mind and mental factors, the three realms. In it, the consciousness that sees meaning, its distinction arises from mental factors. One is the consciousness of conditions, the second is the one who closely engages. Close engagement and severance, and its actor arises from mental factors. For the sake of obscuration and for the sake of planting, for the sake of leading and for the sake of universal grasping, for the sake of completion and for the sake of cutting off the three, for the sake of near severance and for the sake of gathering, for the sake of joining and for the sake of manifestation, for the sake of suffering, wandering afflictions. Three kinds and two kinds are also afflictions, seven kinds arise from unreal imagination. If emptiness is briefly said, definition and types, and its meaning and distinctions, and establishment should be known. The two, real and unreal, things are the definition of emptiness, neither existent nor non-existent, neither different nor one, emptiness.

In brief, Suchness (tathatā), the Limit of Reality (bhūta-koṭi), the Signless (animitta), the Ultimate Meaning (paramārtha), and the Element of Dharma (dharma-dhātu) are merely different names. Not other, nor inverted, this is cessation, the realm of the noble ones, for the cause of the noble dharma, these names have meaning, and are arranged in order. Completely purify all afflictions, that is with defilement and without defilement, like the water element, gold, and the sky, it is hoped that they are pure. Eating, what is eaten, and its body, is the basis of the place, is emptiness (śūnyatā). That is also seen by whom and how? Because that is also emptiness. In order to obtain the two merits, in order to always benefit sentient beings, in order not to abandon samsara, in order not to exhaust merit, in order to completely purify lineage, in order to obtain marks and signs, in order to purify the Buddha's dharmas, the Bodhisattva strives. Here, the substance of person and dharmas does not exist, this is emptiness. That is the existence of non-existent things, that is different from emptiness. If afflictions did not exist, all sentient beings would be liberated. If complete purification did not exist, effort would be fruitless. It is not affliction, nor is it non-delusion, it is not pure, nor is it impure. The first chapter, called 'Chapter on Characteristics' from the *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes*, is finished. The second chapter, called 'Chapter on Obscurations'. Pervasiveness, partial, increase, equality, taking, and abandoning, are the display of the two obscurations, the nature of afflictions is ninefold. All secondary afflictions are obstacles, depression and abandonment, and merely seeing, the view of the aggregates (satkāya-dṛṣṭi) and its basis, cessation and the path and the Saṃgha, obtaining and respect, and resources, skillful in all enjoyments, apart from the ten dharmas such as virtue. Without secondary afflictions, nor birthplace, not yoga, what is produced by what, without birth, nor attention, the assembly is not complete, not possessing lineage and spiritual friends, the mind is completely depressed, nor possessing practice, associating with evil people, from one's own three evil places, the remaining wisdom is not mature, nature is an evil place, laziness and carelessness, and attachment to existence and enjoyment, the mind becomes discouraged, disbelief and displeasure, acting like sound, not valuing the true dharma, greedy for gain and without compassion, poor in hearing and scarce. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
