The Entrance to the Middle Way First Arising of the Mind The Entrance to the Middle Way Sanskrit: Madhyamakāvatāra-nāma Tibetan: dbu ma la 'jug pa zhes bya ba Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! The Śrāvakas (hearers), the middling Buddhas (Pratyekabuddhas), are born from the Powerful One (Buddha). And the Buddhas are born from the Bodhisattvas. The mind of compassion, the non-dual wisdom, And the mind of Bodhi are the cause of the Victorious Ones. Because compassion is the seed of this abundant harvest of the Victors, Like the nourishing earth and the long-lasting rain. Like a ripening fruit that is desired, Therefore, I first praise compassion. Initially clinging to 'I', Then generating attachment to things as 'this is mine'. Like a water bucket drifting without control, I pay homage to that compassion which feels for beings. Like the moon in the water, which is moving, Seeing that all phenomena are empty by their very nature. The mind of this son of the Victorious Ones, in order to Liberate beings, is driven by compassion. Dedicated with the aspirations of Samantabhadra, abiding in joy. From that time on, he obtains The name 'Bodhisattva'. This one is born into the lineage of the Tathāgatas, This one has completely abandoned all three bindings. The Bodhisattva holds supreme joy, And is able to shake a hundred world realms. Progressing from one ground to another, At that time, all paths to lower realms will be closed. At that time, all grounds of ordinary beings will be exhausted. This one is shown to be like the eighth noble one. Even though abiding on the first ground, By the power of merit, he surpasses the Śrāvakas, The solitary Buddhas, and constantly increases. He will become even more wise. At that time, he will become the seed of perfect Buddhahood. First, generosity will become even more excellent. Even giving away one's own flesh and blood, he does so with reverence. This will even become a source of inconceivable merit. All beings desire to obtain happiness, And people's happiness is not without enjoyment. Knowing that enjoyment comes from generosity, Therefore, the Buddha initially spoke of the Dharma of generosity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those who are weak in compassion and extremely harsh in heart, and those who are solely concerned with their own interests, the enjoyments they crave are actually the source of suffering, yet they come from generosity. Even so, when giving, if one encounters a noble being, one can quickly attain liberation. From then on, completely sever the continuation of samsara and thereby move towards peace. Those mindful beings who vow to benefit sentient beings will, through generosity, not be long in attaining joy. Because both sentient and non-sentient beings need compassion, the teachings on generosity are the most important. Hearing the sound of 'how to give' and contemplating it, a Bodhisattva can attain bliss. If the Buddhas entering into peace cannot bring bliss, then what need is there to speak of abandoning everything? One can even cut off one's own body, regarding one's own suffering as the suffering of other beings in hell, etc., and personally feel it. In order to cut off these sufferings, quickly generate diligence. The act of giving, the object of giving, the recipient of giving, and the giver are all empty. This is called the transcendent Paramita (Paramita, Sanskrit, pāramitā, reaching the other shore). If attachment arises towards these three, that is the worldly Paramita. Therefore, the Bodhisattva's mind should firmly remember this, just like obtaining a radiant ornament on a sacred offering, this joy, like jewels and crystals, can dispel all darkness. Commentary on the first generation of Bodhicitta in Madhyamakavatara is completed. Therefore, due to possessing perfect merits, even in dreams one can avoid the defilement of immoral conduct. Body, speech, and mind are purified, thereby accumulating the ten virtuous actions. Look at these ten virtuous actions, through reading, they become very pure. Like the autumn moon, forever pure, and adorning oneself with peaceful light. If his discipline is pure in nature, then his discipline will not change. Therefore, he will never be bound by dualistic thinking. Through generosity, one can obtain enjoyment even in the lower realms, while the downfall of a moral person stems from the lack of discipline. Since both sentient and non-sentient things will be exhausted, he will not have enjoyment in the future. When one can be autonomous and live in harmony, if one does not cherish these, one will be controlled by others like falling off a cliff. In that case, who can one ask for help in the future? Therefore, after the Buddha taught generosity, he then taught the discipline that follows. Merits --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
