How the Jowo Statues Were Built How the Jowo Statues Were Built Homage! The way the Jowo statues were built is as follows: In the past, when Shakyamuni Buddha was dwelling in the Grove of Conquerors, surrounded by a retinue of four kinds of disciples, the noble Manjushri requested, "Oh, Bhagavan, in this present age, sentient beings will look upon your face and make offerings to you, and they will accumulate merit by relying on that. I request that after you pass into nirvana, you show sentient beings an object of reliance for accumulating merit." After this request, the Bhagavan, with a smiling face, emitted four rays of light. One struck the great god Brahma, one struck the great pervasive god Vishnu, one struck the king of the gods Indra, and one struck the craftsman Vishvakarman. They all felt joy, and the great god Brahma, with his palms together, prayed: "The qualities are infinite and inconceivable, The Victorious One, the Protector of the World, the Sage of the Shakyas, The Dharma body made of five precious jewels, I will build it so that virtue and goodness may spread in the ten directions." Vishnu said: "Possessing a pure form, the chief of the two-legged, The Sambhogakaya made of precious jewels, A treasure that fulfills all desires, a place of worship in the Land of Snows, I will build it to eliminate the poverty of sentient beings." Indra said: "The Sage of the Shakyas, the king of the gods, the god of gods, A golden mountain adorned with marks and signs, The Nirmanakaya made of five precious jewels, I will build it so that all beings may accumulate merit." Vishvakarman said: "The teacher of gods and humans, the Lion King of the Shakyas, For the sake of future sentient beings accumulating merit, The wondrous and extraordinary one made of five precious jewels, I, the divine craftsman, will create the three bodies." Thus they requested. After that, the great god Brahma piled a large heap of sapphire, a large heap of molten gold, and a large heap of molten crystal in front of the craftsman Vishvakarman. Vishvakarman also melted the precious jewels, poured them according to the ritual, and built a support for the Dharmakaya of the Bhagavan, in the shape of a stupa, the size of Brahma's cubit, and the color of smoke. Then, the consecration was performed by the Buddha himself, and he blessed it by scattering flow

Scattering flowers. Then, that stupa was invited to the heavenly realm and stayed there. After that, the wisdom dakinis invited it to the land of Oddiyana (now the Swat region in Pakistan) in the west, and it did not fall to the ground, but stayed in the sky in the middle of space. It is known as the "Untouchable Jewel Stupa." Because it came from the heavenly realm, it is also called the "Heavenly Descended Stupa." Because the color is like smoke, it is also called the "Smoke-like Stupa." After that, Khyabjuk (Vishnu) piled up piles of Indra-nila jewels, emerald melts, and crystal melts in front of the craftsman. There, Vishvakarman melted those jewels and poured them into molds, and built the support of the Sambhogakaya, which completely covered the lake surface of Gangtisea (Lake Manasarovar), which was eighty yojanas. The two hands formed the meditation mudra, the body color was dark blue, and there was a crystal bottle on the top of the head. The place of residence is in the outer ocean. From the navel down, it sinks into the water, benefiting the sentient beings in the water. From the navel up, it is on the water, benefiting the sentient beings on the land. Birds stay on the head and shoulders. Due to the contamination of bird droppings, although the body color is dark blue, it also appears white. On the night of the fifteenth of the month, the crystal on the head is illuminated by light, and because there is no water stain, it is bathed and washed. In the outer ocean, merchants who take treasures put their boats into the dock of the stupa, offer offerings, and thus obtain the desired treasures. On the front and back of that stupa, there is a bird call each time. To this, the Buddha also performed consecration, scattering flowers and blessing. After that, Indra brought the heavenly treasures Indra-nila (indra-nīla, इन्द्रनील, sapphire), Indra-gopa (indra-gopa, इन्द्रगोप, cochineal), great emerald, king of great emeralds, beautiful and dignified, and the five kinds of human treasures, namely gold, silver, pearl, coral, and lapis lazuli, a total of ten kinds. In addition, various treasures were accumulated, wanting to shape the body of the Lord when he was twelve years old. At this time, the mother of all beings said: 'At the age of eight, the height of the throne in Lumbini Garden; at the age of twelve, when the foot touches the lower threshold of the gate of Nyen Yod (Shravasti), the head can touch the upper threshold.' With this, the size was indicated, so the craftsman poured the treasures into the mold and shaped the support of the incarnation.
