Profound Path Meditation: The Actual Practice Guidance. Profound Path Meditation: The Actual Practice Guidance. The Profound Path of Kadag Trekchö (Primordial Purity Cutting Through). The Reason for Being the Actual Practice Through the Door of Definition. In the middle, the second section of the virtuous meaning guidance, within the Profound Path Meditation: The Actual Practice Guidance, there are two: the Profound Path of Kadag Trekchö and the Profound Path of Lhündrub Tögal (Spontaneous Presence Leaping Over). First, by showing the state of Kadag as free from elaboration, for those with sharp faculties, although there is no meditation, liberation is attained by repeating the syllable 'la'. The key points of this profound path of Trekchö are to accurately generate the meaning of the state free from elaboration, without error, by integrating shamatha (calm abiding) and vipassanā (insight). That is to say, to increase and generate it in the continuum, which includes both introduction and practice. However, if divided into four guidance methods, it is easier to understand: reason, determination, introduction, and practice. First, the reason for being the actual practice through the door of definition is: merely relying on words that are interconnected, such as profound clarity and appearance-emptiness, as view and meditation, is like seeing a temple but not seeing the three supports (body, speech, and mind of the Buddha), which is a basis but not the actual. Being free from the elaboration of the four extremes or eight limits, although understood by conceptual analysis, it is not established in experience, like a 'prayasapa' (one who has studied but not practiced) who sees the three supports but has not determined their characteristics, which is actual but not a basis. Merely taking conceptual thought as the path, saying that all phenomena are without inherent existence, but not directly realizing the nature of non-inherent existence, so that one remains ordinary at the time of death, like not seeing either the temple or the three supports, is not like a philosophical extreme that is neither of the two. Here, the excellent view of the Vajra Essence, the unsurpassed vehicle, the Great Perfection of Natural Perfection, without clinging to the coarse aspects of what is thought to be view and meditation, directly reveals self-liberation, like truly determining the state of the support and the supported. This, which is both the actual and the basis, is taking the result as the path, the unsurpassed actual practice of all the paths to Buddhahood, as stated by Longchen Namkhai Naljor (Longchenpa). Establishing the Nature of Reality. Cutting Through Thoughts. Second, regarding establishing the nature of reality, from the 'After-Death Meaning Guidance': First, cut through thoughts. In the middle, seek the flaw of the mind. Then, investigate the three sources of arising, abiding, and ceasing, as it is said.

Among the three topics, first, examining thoughts: Who is the one who initially experiences pleasure and pain, who performs the actions of affirmation and negation, good and bad? Who is it that, being deluded, wanders in samsara through successive lifetimes, and who is it that, being liberated, attains Buddhahood? Are the three doors of body, speech, and mind assembled as one, or are they distinct? By whom are they enacted? Through investigation and analysis, it is determined that the chief and root of all is solely the mind, just as one recognizes a thief. As it is said in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "The sole basis of all samsara and nirvana." And in the "Guhyagarbha Tantra": "The very nature of mind, without a basis, is the root of all phenomena." Similarly, it is also said in the Dohas: "The sole nature of mind is the seed of all; from it arise existence, peace, and passing beyond sorrow." The meaning of these statements is the same. Searching for the Weakness of the Mind: Second, searching for the weakness of the mind: Are the body and speech, which are related to the mind, and the mind that grasps at "I," "you," and "self," one or different? If they are one, then like the body and speech, the mind should also be seen and heard; or like the mind, the body and speech should not be seen and heard. If they are different, then what is the single function of the pleasure and pain of the three doors? After such investigation, the body is reduced to indivisible particles, speech vanishes without utterance, and the mind disappears like a bird leaving no trace. After that, neither oneness nor difference can be established, as an example. By examining objects and subjects, arising and ceasing, existence and non-existence, affirmation and negation, permanence and annihilation, separately, it is revealed that all are beyond the intellect and that there is no independent existence apart from what is created by the mind. It is nothing at all, and the clear awareness that does not fall into any extreme is beyond the realm of accurate expression. Knowing that the characteristics of delusion and liberation are pure from the very beginning, as it is said in "Garland of Pearls": "In the primordial purity of the very beginning, delusion cannot even be spoken of. Likewise, what is non-delusion? Therefore, delusion is primordially pure." Examining the Three Places of Origin, Abiding, and Going: Third, examining the three places of origin, abiding, and going: Thus, even if one realizes that this meaningless mind that grasps at "I" as the self has no basis for its objects and actions and is without inherent existence, still, in the manner of observing oneself, from where and how does this essence of mind-awareness initially arise? Where and how does it abide in the middle? And finally, where and how does it go and cease?
