Collection of Instructions by Garab Dorje Lawok Jangsri, JGLG4: 'The Sky Jewel: An Exhortation to the Definitive Dharma' 'The Sky Jewel: An Exhortation to the Definitive Dharma' 'The Sky Jewel: An Exhortation to the Definitive Dharma' The Jonang tradition's tenet is solely the definitive meaning. Those who are devoted to it will quickly attain Buddhahood. Those who are not devoted to it will turn elsewhere. This text aims to elucidate these principles. The term 'Dharma' should be practiced for the benefit of all sentient beings, as boundless as the sky. 'The Sky Jewel: An Exhortation to the Definitive Dharma' Homage to the Bhagavan Buddha! From all faults completely liberated, Qualities and jewels perfectly complete, The sole friend of all sentient beings, compassionate one. Unequaled teacher, Sage, I pay homage! The supreme individuals who uphold your teachings, To all spiritual friends, I offer these words for your ears. All practitioners, for the sake of attaining Buddhahood, Desire to study the true Dharma. However, the yardstick for determining whether a Dharma is truly supreme is: Whether or not one can swiftly attain complete Buddhahood. If it is a Dharma that swiftly attains Buddhahood, Then it is the highest peak of the highest view, The ultimate of the profound path and excellent tenet. Conversely, it is the opposite of the above. The supreme Dharma that swiftly attains complete Buddhahood, Is the third turning of the wheel of Dharma among the three turnings, The Vajrayana among the Sutra and Tantra, And the ten commentaries on the Mind among the treatises. The Teacher, in all the vast Sutras, (A) In the self-commentary Sutra, 'The Definitive Interpretation of Intent', The first turning is the Four Truths, the second is No Characteristics, The third is the Well-Discriminated Dharma. From the sequential turning of the three wheels, When the Well-Discriminated Dharma is not manifest, The first and second turnings, Are provisional and require interpretation. Therefore, they become the source of disputes. If someone clings to this and, through writing and other means, Practices the Dharma, the merit they obtain, Is like the dust on the tip of a fingernail, the water in a cow's hoofprint. But the Well-Discriminated Dharma is the true word of the Tathagata, It is unsurpassed and there is nothing higher than it, And it is not a source of disputes. If one practices this Dharma through writing and other means, The merit they obtain is like the dust of the earth, And is no different from the water of the vast ocean. (B) In the Sutra 'Requested by the King of Dharanis, the Powerful One', The Blessed One said that the essence of the Sugata is obscured by the afflictions of beings, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are three types of defilements: gross, medium, and subtle. In order to purify them sequentially, three Dharmacakras (法轮, Dharma Wheel) were turned. By turning the Dharmacakras in sequence, it is also shown that the third Dharmacakra is superior to the second. For example, to counteract the great, medium, and small objects to be abandoned through meditation, one uses the small, medium, and great paths of meditation. Just as the latter is superior to the former in sequence. Furthermore, the distinction between the three Dharmacakras lies in: What is expressed are the Vinaya (律藏, Discipline Basket), Sutra (经藏, Discourse Basket), and Abhidharma (论藏, Knowledge Basket), What is conveyed are the three trainings of ethics, concentration, and wisdom, taught in sequence. Or, the three aspects of conduct, meditation, and view, are taught in order. Thus, the third Dharmacakra is superior to the second, as stated in the Uttaratantra (宝性论, Sublime Continuum). For example, like the Prajnaparamita (般若波罗蜜多, Perfection of Wisdom) among the six paramitas. (ག) What are the supreme scriptures of the third Dharmacakra? They are the scriptures that explicitly teach the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏, Buddha Nature), or even if they do not explicitly teach it, they imply its meaning well, the Dharmacakra that skillfully distinguishes. That is, distinguishing between essence and husk, or distinguishing between conventional truth and ultimate truth, or distinguishing between characteristics and nature, adventitious and intrinsic, or distinguishing between temporary and ultimate, consciousness and wisdom, or distinguishing between self-arisen and other-arisen, conditioned and unconditioned, or distinguishing between the two truths and the perfectly established, and so on. The scriptures that teach through distinguishing, Maitreya (弥勒菩萨) declared in the Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra (大乘经庄严论, Treatise on the Sublime Continuum of the Great Vehicle), and here again, why do the Buddhas say to sentient beings: 'There is Tathagatagarbha'? In the Samdhinirmocana Sutra (解深密经, Sutra Unraveling the Intent), it is said that 'the Dharmacakra that skillfully distinguishes' is a characteristic of the third Dharmacakra. (ང) The central topic of this supreme sutra is: The Tathagatagarbha, the clear light Dharmakaya (法身, Dharma Body), the permanent, stable, unchanging, all-pervading Lord, self-arisen wisdom, Prajnaparamita, ultimate truth, the immutable perfectly established nature. It resides in the minds of sentient beings as the basis with defilements. It resides in the minds of those on the path as the path of purification. It resides in the three kayas (身, Body) of Sambhogakaya (报身, Enjoyment Body) and Nirmanakaya (化身, Emanation Body), etc., as the stainless fruit. Having faith in this, practicing the ten practices of the Mahayana (大乘, Great Vehicle), one will quickly attain Buddhahood. (ཅ) In the Shanti-viniscaya-sutra (寂静决定经, Sutra of the Determination of Tranquility), which deva (天神, god) for countless kalpas (劫, eon), offered and served the Sangha (僧众, community) to their heart's content, is not equal to hearing that the Tathagata (如来, Thus Gone One) is permanent, is unchanging, merely uttering these words, the merit generated is even greater, immeasurable. In the Jnanlokalankara Sutra (智慧光明庄严经, Sutra of the Ornament of Wisdom Light) it is also said: If someone for eight thousand kotis (俱胝, ten million) of kalpas, practices Prajnaparamita... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
