1-24-2a 1-24-2b

A Collection of Teachings by Gampopa GM25, also known as 'An Introduction to the Root of Mahamudra', or 'Transforming Appearances into the Path', also called 'One Thought is Enough', and also known as 'The Unchanging Nature of Mahamudra'. 1-24-1a (ཡ) The Words of Dharma Lord Dagpo Lhaje Homage to Ratna Guru! Also known as 'An Introduction to the Root of Mahamudra', or 'Transforming Appearances into the Path', also called 'One Thought is Enough', and also known as 'The Unchanging Nature of Mahamudra'. Called 'The Key to My Written Experiences' Also known as 'An Introduction to the Root of Mahamudra', or 'Transforming Appearances into the Path', also called 'One Thought is Enough', and also known as 'The Unchanging Nature of Mahamudra'. 1-24-1b Homage to ratna guru! The Mahamudra instructions of Jetsun Dagpo Nyisgoms. For the sake of fearing samsara and birth and death, I have written down the words of the lama and my own experiences. In general, all the Buddha's teachings are contained within view and conduct. In terms of conduct, one must have great faith and compassion by believing in death and karma, and one must be diligent in virtue by avoiding sin. If we do not turn back from this samsara now, we will wander in samsara forever. Therefore, we must turn our minds away from samsara and cultivate love, compassion, bodhicitta, and whatever else we can. In terms of view, there are generally two types: Mahayana and 1-24-2a Hinayana. Mahayana is further divided into Paramita and Secret Mantra. The Paramita path establishes that appearances are without inherent existence through reasoning based on dependent origination, and then meditates on emptiness with faith. This is the Madhyamaka way of meditation. However, even this itself remains within the dualistic mind of meditator and object of meditation. This does not realize the view. Although it slightly reduces attachment to phenomena, it exhausts countless obscurations, and therefore it is said that one cannot attain Buddhahood. It is said that all Kadamapas and logicians meditate in this way. The Mahamudra view of Milarepa's Secret Mantra tradition says this: 'Becoming accustomed to the ten non-virtuous actions leads to wandering in the three lower realms, which is a fault; becoming accustomed to the ten virtuous actions leads to wandering in the realms of gods and humans. Becoming attached to the taste of samadhi and meditating leads to being born in long-life gods. A thought that is grasped by mindfulness is a quality, and one that is not grasped is a fault. But if you look at it, that is also a fault of dualistic grasping. If you want to accomplish all the qualities such as non-thought, and want to abandon all the faults such as thoughts, that is also 1-24-2b --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He said, 'There is no liberation through actions.' Regarding Mahāmudrā (the Great Seal), one does not cultivate any qualities such as non-mentation or meditating on emptiness (Śūnyatā), nor does one abandon any faults such as discursive thoughts (Vikalpa); that is, not applying the mind to anything. Self-liberation from the mind of dualistic grasping is Mahāmudrā. Although the mind itself may appear to possess qualities such as non-mentation, or appear to have abandoned all faults, the mind is fickle and changes constantly. One may recall what should not be recalled, the ears may hear what should not be heard, and the eyes may see what should not be seen. However, if one does not engage in acceptance or rejection of these, and is free from the dualistic grasping of hope and fear, then non-dual wisdom (Advaya-jñāna) will naturally arise. Rje snyi sgom pa asked, 'Is it not the case that one neither meditates on existence nor non-existence, but simply abides in that state?' He replied, 'Do not engage in too much fabrication of existence or non-existence; let the mind rest naturally as it is.' He was then asked, 'What should one do if discursive thoughts arise?' He said, 'Simply leave them as they are; they will naturally subside, and there is no need to abandon them.' During a gathering of about ten monks, he said, 'The Pāramitā (perfections, going to the other shore) is the path of abandonment; therefore, one must fundamentally abandon unpleasantness and other afflictions through antidotes. Tantra (secret mantra) is the path of the basis of illusion; therefore, one transforms the five poisons (Pañca kleśāḥ) and all discursive thoughts into the path. Without accepting or rejecting the five poisons and discursive thoughts, simply allow them to arise naturally, and they will naturally pacify and naturally liberate themselves.' When Gampopa (Sgam po pa) was traveling to upper Dwags po, one evening as all the monks gathered, Gampopa said, 'Practitioners think there is no discursive thought, and they think discursive thought cannot be stopped.' Gampopa said, 'Just as the more wood there is, the bigger the fire, the more discursive thoughts there are, the more non-dual wisdom grows. Therefore, it is sufficient to simply allow the five poisons and discursive thoughts to arise naturally.' He said, 'Without acceptance or rejection, without fabrication, this itself is the wisdom mind of all the Buddhas of the three times. Whether we recognize the Buddha or not lies in this. The Buddha also has nothing other than this.' Just as there is no difference in the moon itself between the first day of the month and the full moon, similarly, by resting without fabrication, there is no difference between the non-dual wisdom realized today and the wisdom mind of the Buddha. To completely cut off dualistic discursive thoughts is to be a Buddha. To attain this state, one must abandon worldly activities, rely solely on secluded mountain retreats, and naturally cultivate non-dual wisdom. Without prolonged effort, one will attain Buddhahood.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
