Collection of Instructions by Gampopa GM21: Instructions on Mahamudra, including Teachings and Songs. 1-20-1a (Wa) The words of Dharma Lord Dagpo Lhaje. Instructions on Mahamudra, including Teachings and Songs. Instructions given to the disciple Todlungpa: Instructions on Mahamudra, including Teachings and Songs. 1-20-1b Homage to all the venerable Lamas! The instructions and essential points of Mahamudra, which have become the essence, have two aspects: first, refuting five wrong cognitions, and then the actual instructions. First, refuting the five wrong cognitions. First, refuting the wrong cognition about the essence: Now abandoning bad thoughts, hoping to gain good wisdom in the future. But according to this instruction, the root of all Dharmas is the mind, so there is nothing to abandon. Second, refuting the wrong cognition about the object: Wanting to abandon the five poisons, but according to this instruction, they should be transformed into the path. Third, refuting the wrong cognition about time: Wanting to realize through countless eons, but according to this instruction, one should hope to realize it now. Fourth, refuting the wrong cognition about wisdom: Wanting to realize through reason, but according to this instruction, one should hope to realize it through instructions. Fifth, refuting the wrong cognition of distinguishing between good and bad in Buddhas and sentient beings: There is no other difference except whether one has realized one's own mind or not. There are three aspects to the instructions: first, being skilled in starting meditation; second, being skilled in maintaining experience in meditation; and third, being skilled in ending meditation. First, being skilled in starting meditation includes two aspects: the posture of the body and the way of abiding of the mind. First, the posture of the body is to have the seven characteristics of Vairochana's posture. Second, the way of abiding of the mind includes two aspects: recognizing the undistracted mind and recognizing the distracted mind. First, recognizing the undistracted mind: The essence of the mind is bliss, clarity, and non-thought, without any modification, naturally and effortlessly abiding. Second, recognizing the distracted mind includes four aspects: the object of observation, the method of observation, what is seen, and the way of seeing. First, the object of observation is thoughts of good, bad, and neutral. Second, the method of observation is to directly observe any arising thoughts with the eye of wisdom. Third, what is seen is that after the thoughts have disappeared, it is not that there is no mind, but that the mind --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The essence is emptiness, appearing as a state of clarity and purity. This is the indivisible state of Dharmadhatu (Tibetan: དབྱིངས་, meaning: Dharmadhatu) and Wisdom (Tibetan: ཡེ་ཤེས་, meaning: Wisdom). Fourth, regarding the view, there are four points: What is seen? When is it seen? With what Dharma is it seen? How is it seen? What is seen? The mind is seen. If the mind is realized, one becomes a Buddha. When is it seen? It has existed since beginningless time. With what Dharma is it seen? It is seen as pervading all Dharmas. How is it seen? It is seen as transcending the realm of the six senses, not clinging to color and form. In the middle, one who is skilled in relying on experience, if the mind is agitated, let it rest in the agitation itself; if the mind is dull, focus on the state of awakening it. Finally, one who is skilled in cutting off proliferation should maintain clear and brief awareness, maintaining a good balance between meditation and non-meditation. The sudden enlightenment of Mahamudra (Tibetan: ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེན་པོ་), with seals attached. This is the oral instruction of Rinpoche Gampopa (Tibetan: རིན་པོ་ཆེ་སྒམ་པོ་པ་), the practice manual of Dakpo Gomchung (Tibetan: དྭགས་པོ་སྒོམ་ཆུང་), the advice given to the master Todlungpa (Tibetan: སློབ་དཔོན་སྟོད་ལུངས་པ་). Advice given to the master Todlungpa: I prostrate and take refuge in the precious Lama! Having obtained this precious human body, if we do not accomplish a Dharma that brings peace of mind, it is like pouring a vase filled with inconceivable virtues, such as the essence of medicine that equals the sun and moon, into a vase of poison that quickly kills, and then wandering in the three lower realms. Therefore, we must cherish the opportunity to meet the Lama, who is no different from the rare and precious Buddha, and make this meeting meaningful. Having received the nectar of the Lama's teachings, we must listen to this rare and special instruction that pacifies the poison of afflictions, and we must completely turn our minds away from samsara. If we do not awaken to this, this life will be meaningless, no different from a Rakshasa or demon. At this time when we are enjoying the Mahayana Dharma and training our minds in the two aspects of Bodhicitta, if we do not attain any accomplishment, we are no different from ordinary ignorant people, like blind people, extremely foolish, like pigs. After certainty arises in the mind, if we are still unable to renounce attachment to food and desires, we are no different from hungry ghosts suffering from thirst and hunger. If we claim that inner luminosity has arisen and that our meditation is good, but we still cling to this life and cannot abandon the five poisons, then our so-called meditation is in vain. Mere verbal Dharma is useless; we must touch the essence of the Dharma in order to be liberated from samsara. Otherwise, we are like a madman among madmen, like the lowest of people. These five poisons or three poisons are always deceiving us, and we spend our whole lives... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
