Collected Teachings of Gampopa GM11: The Utterances of the Three Relatives (Uncle, Nephew, and Grand-nephew) The Utterances of the Three Relatives The Utterances of Lord Gampopa Homage to the precious Lama! According to the system of the pāramitās (perfections), realization arises in the mindstream by relying on the mind of bodhicitta (enlightenment), the view of māyā (illusion), and the three emptinesses. According to the system of mantra, realization arises in the mindstream by relying on the body as deity, speech as recitation, and mind as dharmatā (suchness). If one does not realize this, one will not attain buddhahood. According to the system of the yogi, this way of practicing dharma goes upwards and not downwards. Those with sharp faculties will attain buddhahood; those with middling faculties will be born in the five noble realms; and even those with lesser faculties will be born as gods. From the perspective of the two truths, all kinds of thoughts and awareness are relative truth. The essence of mind is ultimate truth. This experience of the essence that is present now will also come from buddhahood. Although various kinds of knowledge arise, they can be used, just as water comes from ice. Emptiness and compassion are inseparable, like light emanating from light. All thoughts are like light emanating from light. Do not sleep too much. Realize that the essence is free from arising and ceasing, and it is enough not to perish. If all dharmas are condensed, they are condensed into two: thought and non-thought. Thought itself is also the dharmakāya (body of truth). Realizing one thing, everything comes back to you. There is nothing to say to you, but the ultimate truth cannot be fully attained even by the words of the lama, because it is beyond the realm of thought. If one sees with thought, then one sees the ultimate truth with relative truth, and the ultimate truth will also perish. If one sees with ultimate truth, then this, including thought, is just one's own mind, which is luminous. If one meditates on it as being equal to the edge of the sky, it will arise and remain in that way. If one meditates on it in other noble places, it will come and remain in that way. If one meditates on it in this very place, it will come and remain in that way. Whose is the luminosity? It is one's own. Realization and non-realization pervade everything. One knows oneself, self-illuminating and unobstructed. Luminous without top or bottom, luminous without beginning or end, luminous without the presence or absence of conceptual thought. Remaining in that state is called transcending the world. There is nothing to add to it. If one extracts realization from it, then that desire itself is flawed. If one extracts gain, signs, or impetus from it, then that itself is flawed. After the essence has arisen, there will be gain or questions for the old practitioners who have meditated for a long time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When asked if he had realized the nature, he said, 'There is no need to ask, and no need to reveal. I just let those who claim to be lamas come to me.' Even having realized the nature, one still cannot recognize it in dreams. When asked if one can realize it in the bardo (intermediate state), he said, 'All lamas say that one must realize it in dreams. But in my view, even if one does not realize it in dreams, one can realize it in the bardo. Now, because the practice is not enough, the dreams are not clear enough, so one cannot realize it. But in the bardo, it will be clearer than now, so one will be able to realize it.' If a person who has realized the nature dies now, will he continue to realize it in the bardo, or will he fall into confusion?' He said, 'If the nature is constantly present now, then one will continue to realize it in the bardo. Those who fall into confusion will still fall into confusion in the bardo. But practicing there will be more beneficial than here, so one will be able to realize it.' If one has continuously realized the ultimate bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment), is it necessary to practice relative bodhicitta?' He said, 'There are three kinds: arising from habituation, arising from practice, and arising from realization. Arising from habituation means that one has practiced in previous lives, so in this life there is no need to practice, and the bodhicitta arises naturally. Arising from practice means that it arises from practice in this life. Arising from realization means that having realized the truth, compassion and bodhicitta naturally arise for sentient beings who have not realized it.' There is no need to separately practice relative bodhicitta and ultimate bodhicitta. If one realizes the ultimate, compassion will naturally arise for the benefit of others, which is the cause and effect. Afflictions will also naturally subside. Even if one says one has realized the nature, one will still commit evil deeds. If compassion and bodhicitta are weak, then the nature has not truly arisen. That is what Lama Jetsun (至尊) said.' When asked if Jetsun felt uncomfortable when he was sick, he said, 'When he was sick, his mind was not uncomfortable, and there was no harm. Wherever he was, he practiced luminosity, and the luminosity gradually appeared, without any harm.' Rather than reciting mantras for the sick, it is more beneficial to focus on where the sick person is and practice luminosity.' When asked what is meant by the blending of nature and meditation, he said, 'Practice means that no matter what one does, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, one is inseparable from luminosity and always abides in the nature, which is blending.' When asked, 'Sometimes one loses mindfulness and falls into conceptual thoughts. When one regains mindfulness and returns to the nature, is that non-blending?' He said, 'That is non-blending.' 'Then, is it that the realization of the nature is not thorough enough? Is it because the practice time is too short?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
