Collected Teachings of Gampopa GM9: Teachings of Jetsun Dakpo (Venerable Dakpo Rinpoche, Gampopa) and Questions and Answers on Meditation Methods. Teachings of Jetsun Dakpo (Venerable Dakpo Rinpoche, Gampopa) and Questions and Answers on Meditation Methods. What is the essence? Teachings of Jetsun Dakpo (Venerable Dakpo Rinpoche, Gampopa) and Questions and Answers on Meditation Methods. I take refuge in the precious Lama! Please grant your blessings! When asked about the essence, the Jetsun's answers were written down and compiled. Furthermore, when asked whether it is one's own awareness or the awareness of others, he replied: It is neither. In the state of naturally knowing awareness, it is inexpressible. When asked: Among the emptiness that feels empty when experiencing emptiness, the emptiness of thinking it is emptiness, and the emptiness free from elaboration, which of these three is it? He replied: It is neither of the first two; it is the emptiness free from elaboration. The simultaneous arising of awareness and the emptiness free from elaboration is co-emergent. Recognizing that it has always been there is wisdom. 1-9-2a Question: To what extent should Samatha (calm abiding) and Vipassana (insight) be mixed? Is it possible to engage in all activities without separating from single-pointed concentration? In post-meditation, are there conceptual thoughts? Is post-meditation like a dream or illusion? After post-meditation, when ordinary conceptual thoughts arise, can they be cut off? Answer: It would be best if it were like the former (remaining in a state of Samatha), but that is only a possibility. The middle state (post-meditation accompanied by conceptual thoughts) is acceptable. If ordinary conceptual thoughts arise after post-meditation and cannot be cut off, then Samatha and Vipassana have not been mixed. Question: Does the wind of wisdom waver? Answer: All wavering is the wind of karma. When all subtle winds of karma are purified, and only the wind of wisdom remains, that is when one attains Buddhahood. Question: Does the wind of wisdom cease? Does samsara have a beginning and an end? Answer: Dharmakaya (the body of truth) transcends both cessation and non-cessation. Co-emergent wisdom is an experience beyond the mind; at all times, it is Dharmakaya. The two Rupakayas (form bodies, i.e., Nirmanakaya and Sambhogakaya) cease in self-appearance but do not cease in the appearance to others. Whether samsara has a beginning and an end is uncertain. Question: To what extent should one develop view and meditation to prevent rebirth in the Bardo (intermediate state)? Answer: Those with the highest faculties can prevent rebirth in the Bardo, and the highest faculties refer to realizing the true nature. Meditating after realization is even better. Question: If one does not meditate on the essence in dreams, what will happen in the Bardo? Answer: If one meditates on the essence in dreams, then one will definitely prevent rebirth in the Bardo. Question: Does meditating on the essence prevent the winds of karma? Answer: Yes, it does. 1-9-2b Question: Meditating on the winds... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone asked, 'Is it possible to realize the essence?' He replied, 'It is possible.' He said, 'My guru, Milarepa, only practiced gTum mo (Tumbum yoga).' Someone asked, 'Which is easier, realizing the essence or practicing the winds?' He replied, 'Realizing the essence is easier.' Someone asked, 'If realizing the essence is integrated into daily life, is there still room for improvement?' He replied, 'There is no room for improvement.' Someone asked, 'Is there a difference between the realized essence and the habitual essence?' He replied, 'The only difference is the length of time; the essence itself is no different.' He said, 'After realizing the essence, no matter how long one practices integrating it into daily life, the essence itself will not become better.' He said, 'There is no good or bad among the essence of the current practitioners, the bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis, and the Buddhas.' He said, 'If one realizes the essence but dies without integrating it into daily life, will the karma experienced from previous lives onwards, and the negative karma created in this life, affect the next life? Will karma follow?' He replied, 'It will not affect, and karma will not follow.' One of my disciples, a Tsangpa, sold some things at a festival and spent the money here. After I taught him to practice, he made progress. I thought, I should write many pith instructions for purifying negative karma and offer them to him.' He said, 'Will that purify negative karma?' I replied, 'It will.' He said, 'Then I will do it.' Later, I went to the place of skyo sangs, and he came to me and said, 'I don't seem to have any negative karma to purify.' He said, 'That's how it is when one realizes the essence.' Someone asked, 'Which has more power to purify negative karma, confessing past negative karma through the four powers or briefly practicing the essence?' He replied, 'Briefly practicing the essence has more power.' He said, 'The person who practices after realizing the essence, from the perspective of the nature of samadhi, has already transcended the path of meditation. From the perspective of the signs of appearance, they may not have even transcended the path of accumulation, but the power of the essence is strong if it is in accordance with the path.' He said, 'All the signs of the path that appear are provisional teachings and do not happen to anyone; they are merely the appearances of others. Therefore, if one practices the channels and winds, signs that correspond to the path and luminosity will appear.' He said, 'All of these are common siddhis (Siddhi, Sanskrit: सिद्धि, siddhi, accomplishment) and attainments, which are not helpful for attaining Buddhahood.' He said, 'Many signs are described in the Maitreya's teachings (byams chos) and other scriptures. There are also descriptions of having signs without realization, having realization without signs, and having both realization and signs of the path. There are also descriptions of some people not knowing what will happen.' He said, 'Is the accumulation of merit the cause for the fruit of wisdom or the cause for rebirth?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
