Collection of Teachings of Gampopa GM2: Biography of Jetsun Marpa and Jetsun Mila 1-2-1a (kha) Biography of Jetsun Marpa and Jetsun Mila Biography of Jetsun Marpa and Jetsun Mila Marpa Lotsawa (the translator) was his son. When he was young, he liked to fight with everyone. His father thought, 'This son of mine will either be killed or will kill someone. It would be better to send him to study, perhaps he could achieve something.' So, he gave him many possessions and sent him to Drogmi Lotsawa (Drogmi the Translator). There, he offered Drogmi a horse and requested to hear the Dharma. Drogmi Lotsawa became very devoted to the Dharma and went to Nepal. While listening to the Dharma from the Nepalese Śīlārakṣita, he learned that all the Nepalese were going to India to hear the Dharma, and he thought, 'Why shouldn't I go?' So he went to India. He first met Lama Pendapa and Karma Tsa, and relied on them for three years. Then, he went as far as the northern gold mines of Tibet and offered three measures of gold to Pendapa, who was very pleased and said, 'I have a Lama named Nāropa, you should go there.' He introduced him to Drikamashila. It is said that he then listened to the Dharma from Nāropa and Maitrīpa, among others. In terms of merit, he stayed in the presence of Nāropa for six years without even a single 'sonava' (small achievement or benefit) occurring. It is said that the sign of accumulating merit is simply meeting Nāropa. After that, he meditated on the essential instructions of the explanatory and practice lineages, and on the way back to Tibet, he taught some Dharma. In Ü-Tsang, Marpa Goya offered ten measures of gold and requested to hear the Dharma. Then, he crossed Lake Nups, and the small texts of essential instructions fell into the water. It is also said that Gnyos Lotsawa suspected that he had thrown the texts into the Ganges River. He went back to look for the Lama, but he could not find him in the forest where the Lama was practicing. When he finally found him, the Lama did not give him the oral instructions. The Lama did not teach the Dharma, but threw away all his possessions, holding only a skull cup. He only gave the blessing of the tsok (gathering). Lama Marpa was an old disciple, so he also received the skull cup. He stayed there for two years and made repeated requests, after which the Lama gave him even harsher treatment than before. Then, he went to Lhodrak and stayed there. Meston Tsonpa of Tsangrong offered him wealth filling six 'bre' (a unit of measurement for land) of fields and requested to hear the Dharma. Geshe Zhungpa listened to the Nyingma secret mantra from Geshe Gyerchungwa and stayed there. When Geshe Gyerchungwa heard the history of Lama Lhoba (Marpa), he said to Rngok (Rngok Dorje), 'The two of us...'

He said, 'Go there to listen to the Dharma.' Then, five servants of Lhozhag (a place) went there. They offered a horse to Lama Marpa (a person). The Lama said, 'If this horse of yours is a greeting gift, it is too much; if it is an offering, it is too little.' There, while listening to the Dharma, Mes (a person) Tsonpo (a person) thought that the teachings were very profound, so he also sent monks to request Marpa to go to Tsang (a place). Marpa thought of returning to Lhozhag. In the thought of returning, he thought, 'I will not go to Tsang, my parents are also here, and the Dharma is also suitable for me, so I will stay.' Then he requested to return, and Marpa said, 'Okay.' Then he offered seventy cows and black cows, a tent, a dog, and a porcelain bowl. Later, Mila (a person), as a servant, also offered a hundred pieces of mutton. He offered most of the scriptures, a total of one hundred and ten volumes. After offering these, the Lama also bestowed four Dharma seats: Mahamaya (Sanskrit transliteration, the great illusion), Gur (Sanskrit transliteration, tent), Hevajra (Sanskrit transliteration, the joyful Vajra), and so on. In addition, all the powerful people came to serve and ask for the Dharma, and the Lama gave teachings to them. Once, the Lama gathered the disciples in a room, blocked the holes and windows, let fireflies in, and almost made them fly. Another time, a yak died of hunger, and the Lama said, 'Did the yak die?' A servant said, 'It died.' The Lama took a tattered birch bark and sat there, drying it in a spacious place. He built a nine-story castle and a temple with many doors. As a great translator, although he never seemed to meditate, he was always in Samadhi. He realized the truth of Dharma nature, like an emanation. He said that his disciples would predict students who are better than the disciples, and so on. His son was Lama Ngog (a person) Chungpa (a person), who heard a lot of Dharma from a young age. Later, he met Lama Marpa, performed three confessions, and because his service was very attentive, the Lama imparted all the teachings to him. He said that through dreams and illusory bodies, he personally saw fifteen selflessness goddesses. The son of these two was Lama Milarepa (a person), who was a descendant of the Mila family of Gungthang (a place), and his name was Thospa Ga (a person). Because there were only father and son, the relationship was very close. He went to Utsang (a place) to seek witchcraft, learned a lot of witchcraft, and returned. Later, in Tsangrong (a place), he listened to the Dharma from Stonpa Lhaga (a person). Stonpa said, 'Are you happy now? Or have you completed the great perfection, which is the pinnacle of all vehicles, the essence of all instructions, the inner...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
