It will become like that. Those of the Hearer and Solitary Buddha lineage are not like that. If he is a person of dull faculties, even if clear words are spoken, he will become very dull in understanding the meaning of the Dharma, retaining it, and examining it separately. If he is a person of middling faculties, it is not like that. If he is a person of sharp faculties, contrary to speaking simple words to a person of dull faculties, even if profound words are spoken, he will quickly understand the meaning of the Dharma, retain it, and distinguish it. If he is one who indulges in desire, when pleasing words are spoken, he will be very delighted, joyful, follow the meaning, have goosebumps, shed tears, his mind will become smooth, and he will show a gentle mind. If he is one who indulges in hatred, it should be known that it is the opposite of that. If he is one who indulges in delusion, if definitive words, endowed with nirvana, without confusion, are spoken, he will become frightened, terrified, and completely afraid, just as the dull faculties were shown before. If he is one who indulges in pride, he will not listen very respectfully, nor will he pay attention. Likewise, he will not set his mind to know everything, and even if he has faith, he will not give reverence or praise. If he is one who indulges in conceptual thought, although he listens carefully, his mind will become distracted and he will grasp wrongly. He will grasp, but it will be unstable and he will not grasp firmly. Even if he retains it, it will be forgotten, and he will repeatedly ask again and again. Therefore, the lineage, faculties, and habits should be well examined. How should the lineage, faculties, and habits be well examined through behavior? For a person of the Hearer lineage, the signs of indulging in desire and so on, which were shown before, are called behavior. Through that behavior, the corresponding lineage, faculties, and habits can be known accordingly.

It should be well examined. Then, how can one thoroughly examine the lineage, basis, and behavior by knowing the categories of mind? If a yogi, a knower of yoga, has attained the wisdom of the categories of mind, then by knowing the minds of others, he can truly know their lineage, basis, and behavior as they are, and thus thoroughly examine them. Having abandoned all faults, attained the unobtainable wisdom, and fully realized it, with the power of knowing the various realms, one directly sees. From the excellent Dharma spoken for the benefit of whom, like Mount Sumeru, taking a particle, it is explained for the sake of the first worker. Among them, there are seven types of people who are first workers: from those with strong desire to those with strong conceptualization, and those who are even-minded and those with little affliction. What is the sign of even-mindedness? That is, someone who in past lives did not cultivate or become accustomed to desire, hatred, ignorance, pride, and conceptualization. Although they have not practiced many times, they have not seen these dharmas as faults, nor have they been disgusted, nor have they truly understood them. Therefore, due to that cause and that condition, now they will not develop great desire for objects that are in accordance with desire, hatred, ignorance, pride, and conceptualization, and desire will not arise for a long time. However, it is not that desire will not arise from that object. Just as desire is, so are hatred, ignorance, pride, and conceptualization. This is called an even-minded person. What is the nature of a person with little affliction? That is, someone who in past lives did not cultivate or become accustomed to desire, and did not practice many times, and also saw its faults many times, and was disgusted, and truly understood it. Therefore, due to that cause and that condition, now when encountering large, numerous, superior, and manifest objects that can generate desire, desire arises slowly, and for medium and small objects, it does not arise at all. Just as desire is, so are hatred, ignorance, pride, and conceptualization known.
