The Jewel Wheel of Debate. The Jewel Wheel of Debate. The Jewel Wheel of Debate abides. Homage to glorious Vajrasattva. The sovereign Trisong Detsen (742-797) circumambulated the master Vairochana for seven days, pressing his right kneecap into the ground, and placing his feet on his head, he requested thus: Exemplifying the wheel's mother and child, like the sun rising in a cloudless sky, although able to illuminate all of phenomenal existence without exception, if the lesser vehicles, with eloquent words and fine phrases, extol the beginning and end of the wheel, and the virtues of others, how should one act when disputes arise? Thus he requested. The great master replied: Great sovereign, listen! Trisong Detsen, son of a Bodhisattva, there is no need to teach you. When I went to the land of Oddiyana in the past, the crystal child, endowed with a thousand qualities, was never confused about all the vehicles. Taking the name from the example, I asked for the weapon of speech. Taking the name from the meaning, I asked for the wheel of debate. Great sovereign, like this, asking for the wheel of debate is extremely excellent. Even if there is no actual debate, in the degenerate age of the five hundred, a time will come when the Great Perfection will be spread out openly. A time will come when one's own mind, fluttering like the wind, cannot be controlled, yet one acts as a guru for others. A time will come when one's own mind is not in accordance with the lineage, yet one recites scriptures and argues. A time will come when one enters the door of some practice, and one extols one's own virtues and slanders others. A time will come when one does not see one's own faults, which are as big as a mountain, but one looks at the faults of others, which are as small as a horse's tail. A time will come when the lesser vehicles, without considering the meaning of the wheel's mother and child, will hold their heads high and slander each other. In that time, for the sake of future generations, this great meaning of the wheel of debate should be written down and sealed by the king. Thus he said. Then the great master sat on a comfortable seat and taught this, called the Jewel Wheel of Debate, the essence of all scriptures, the quintessence of all instructions, the pinnacle of all tantras, the extremely profound translation of the Lesser Vehicle Sarva. This Jewel Wheel of Debate explains the meaning in five ways: asking outwards and inwards...

Answer, if you ask others, ask about the key points and essentials. If others ask you, dodge like a foolish crow. Your own mind should remain very stable like a great mountain. Also, great sovereign, the meaning of debate is like this: make your own vows and have others make vows as well. The method of debate should be understood in this way. Establish the proposition to be proven, the reason, the example, and the dharma-nature. Have the other party make the same vows as well. Explain your own tenets in this way: the teachings of the nine vehicles, called the subject of dharma. Make the vow that it is "without inherent existence," and why is there a reason? Because it is knowable. For example, like the moon in water. Say that what is to be established is the dharma-nature. In this regard, understand it yourself and have others make vows in accordance with it as well. Also, great sovereign, listen. The teachings of the nine vehicles, called the subject of dharma, refer to the fact that even up to Atiyoga, there is clinging. Clinging is clinging to names. If you do not understand liberation from names and suffering, Vajrasattva has not said that you can encounter the true meaning. If clinging is not liberated from names, calculating the height and depth of a rope is small-minded and of small wisdom. The vow that it is "without inherent existence" refers to the fact that both the external object of grasping and the internal mind of clinging are produced from the fabrication of names. Names are merely appearances, and in reality, they do not truly become entities, so they are without inherent existence. Therefore, the vow has no fault. Why is there a reason? Because it is knowable. Knowable refers to the object of the mind, and the true Dharmakaya is not the object of the mind. Mind is Sarva, and name is also Sarva, because name is mind. Therefore, knowable Sarva is the teachings of the nine vehicles. Why? Because the nine vehicles have names. For example, the moon in water is a metaphor for the Dharmakaya. It is not non-existent, nor is it non-existent, appearance becomes form. Things do not become characteristics, there is no obstruction of touch. It is liberation from the extremes of permanence and annihilation. It is a similar metaphor for the Dharmakaya. This is what the crystal child said. What is to be established is dharma, dharma refers to appearance becoming form. Nature refers to touch.
