Treatise on Grammar. Treatise on Grammar. In Indian language: Śabdaśāstra. In Tibetan language: Treatise on Grammar. Homage to the All-Knowing! The term "Vyākaraṇa" generally refers to pointing out whatever exists, but here it refers to making language clear and distinct. Its basis or place is learning, or becoming the place of words or meanings. The eight are the place of the agent, etc. Among these, the place of the agent is the place for accomplishing a task. The place of collection is the place of the gate for collecting words that have meaning. The place of transformation is the place of sound that transforms closely to the essence of language. The place of uprightness is the place of sound that distinguishes and differentiates from others. The place of entry is the basis for the entry of letters and the place of sound that shows symbols and terms. The place of distinction is the place of sound that shows how one sound can be transformed into all sounds, and how one sound can apply to all meanings. The place of aspect is the place of sound that shows the power of a person. The place of object is the place of sound that shows the essence or main part of a thing. Therefore, in order to show the classification and nature of the place of the agent, it is said, "Therefore, the place of the agent is," and so on. Showing the accomplishment of one task with eight words of the agent is the rule of the eight words of the agent. Similarly, showing one task at a time with six and four words of the agent is also the rule of the six words of the agent and the rule of four. Among these, the eight words are "who does," etc. Among these, "who does" refers to the initial object of the agent or the word of mere meaning. For example, just as the agent who cooks rice porridge is Devadatta, the agent who generates afflictions is inappropriate attention, the agent who generates the path is the view of faith in the cause and effect of Dharma, and the agent who generates consciousness is the action of thinking. This is called the word of the nature of the object. Or, just as what is cooked is rice porridge, what is generated is afflictions, the path, and consciousness, showing only the nature of the meaning. This is called the initial word. "With what" refers to, for example, Devadatta with

Or, just as one designates the person who cooks rice, or designates what to cook, designates cooking rice, just as inappropriate attention gives rise to afflictions, etc., or paying attention to afflictions, etc., this is called the second type of designating word. Who does it, for example, like fire cooking rice, ignorance gives rise to afflictions, faith gives rise to the path, and conditions give rise to consciousness, this is called the third type of agent word. Why do you do it, for example, like cooking rice to teach the Dharma, afflictions arise for the sake of the aggregates, karma is created for the sake of merit, and consciousness arises for the sake of not focusing on objects, this is called the fourth type of word for the sake of. Where do you do it from, for example, like making rice from rice, afflictions arise from distraction from objects, the path arises from the three wisdoms, and consciousness arises from habitual tendencies of the same kind, this is called the fifth type of word of origin. Whose doing is it, for example, like cooking for offering, it is the affliction of samsara, it is the path of the noble ones, it is the consciousness of the eye, etc., this is called the sixth type of word of relationship. Where do you do it, for example, like cooking in a pot, all afflictions reside on the aggregates of taking and arise, and the path resides on the uncontaminated aggregates and arises, this is called the seventh type of word of place. What is called what, for example, rice is named rice on the basis of meaning, all the names of afflictions, consciousness, and the path, etc., are based on the essence of the meaning of the dharmas, this is called the eighth type of word of designation. The rule of the six agent words is that Devadatta cooks rice, offering sacrifices and cutting down trees, etc., the first is the word that transforms the agent or merely shows the nature. To whom do you do it, this is the second word of action, whatever is to be done, the agent makes another thing the object, such as doing to the tree. Who does it, etc.
