The treatise on ethics called "A Drop to Nourish Beings." Written by Nagarjuna. The treatise on ethics called "A Drop to Nourish Beings." Written by Nagarjuna. In Sanskrit: Byasha Sujantu Bindu Posha Nama. In Tibetan: The treatise on ethics called "A Drop to Nourish Beings." Homage to the noble Manjushri, the Youthful! Manjushri, the source of glory, the glory of all glories. Whose gentle nature pervades all with loving-kindness. Known as gentle and glorious, Lord of compassion. I pay homage to Manjushri, the Lord of all! For beings of inferior intellect, like darkness, to illuminate the lamp of poetry. Though I am lowly and have no lamp of poetry, yet to nourish fools, I will speak of a mere drop of water. One should not speak of the faults of others. Why speak of the faults of others? For I too have them, like the fox and the woman. One should not praise oneself. Why praise oneself? That is small-minded and of poor wisdom, like Kalantaka. One should not rely on bad friends. Whoever relies on bad friends? Look at how the lice were destroyed by relying on Maguta. One should not consult with the wicked. If one consults with the wicked, even if one speaks well, it will turn out badly. Look at how the monkey destroyed Kalantaka's nest. One should be mindful in all actions. One should always abandon carelessness. Like a drunken elephant, one should never do such a thing. One should always speak words as one has examined them. Whoever speaks without examining, it is like the raving of a madman. One should never speak unnecessary lies. Harming others without benefiting oneself, like the lies of Nitso. One should not speak lies. If one speaks lies, one will quickly be known by others, like the lies of the cat. By pretending to be virtuous, whoever pretends to be virtuous, that one will not become a monk, like the queen of the Brahmin Naya. Do not listen to the words of bad friends. Listening to the words of bad friends, one will be deceived in vain, like the turtle and the monkey. Do not listen to the words of the deceitful with sweet tongues. Whoever listens to those words.

For example, the banner of Indra, see how it deceives the Asuras and others. Do not listen to the words of harmful people; listening to those words will not benefit oneself, just as a fox is destroyed by fire. Even if one is in harmony with sinful friends and speaks various words with joy, that sinful person is a demon, like a Rakshasi on an island. Even barbarians can be rich, and even animals can be brave. Speaking words that accord with reason is very rare in this world. Therefore, one should dedicate one's life to striving for virtues. Whoever does not learn virtues is like a foolish animal. A mouth without virtues is like a hole in the ground. A mouth adorned with virtues is like a delightful lotus. Learn knowledge in youth; if you want yogurt, prepare from winter onwards; sow seeds when it is warm and moist. These three are the causes for immediate ripening. One should strive for virtues; what is the use of adopting an arrogant attitude? A cow that has no milk, even if a bell is hung on it, no one will want it. Even if one possesses perfection, one should not despise others; with a mind like ghee, conceal all virtues within. Even if a wise person is small in stature, do not despise him because he is easily discarded, just as a clever rabbit can take the life of a lion. Without discrimination of high or low for all beings, if one helps like the sun, all will be repaid, just as a mouse helps an elephant. Generate a mind of benefit for all beings, sometimes be humble like grass, sometimes burn like fire, sometimes be like a snow mountain, sometimes be like an army. When living in another's country and living on another's food, no matter how much one is despised, remaining silent will bring happiness. Having associated with evil people for a long time and having enjoyed many delicious foods, one will surely abandon friends, like a person who falls into a well. If a person's mind is constantly changing, then his friends will not remain constant. What is a person with extreme afflictions like? Like dyeing white cloth with bark dye. If a clever and wise person wants to make enemies very unhappy, then speak harsh words.
